Computer Science & Information Technology Department

MISSION STATEMENT: 2012

Marymounts Technology Department supports the pedagogically sound use of technology with the goal of creating responsible life-long learners, computer users and programmers. Moreover, to be well-educated citizens in a computing intensive world and to be prepared for careers in the 21st century, the department promotes a clear understanding of the principles and practices in computer science and actively fosters creativity and critical thinking in a transdisciplinary setting. With a committed focus on problem solving, algorithmic thinking and computing, students learn to develop and communicate ideas in a student-centered environment and to create, invent and produce new products from original ideas. Ask to picture a computer programmer, most of us describe the archetypical computer geek, a brilliant but socially-awkward male. We imagine him as a largely nocturnal create, passing sleepless nights writing computer code ... It may be surprising, then, to learn that the earliest computer programmers were women and that the programming eld was once stereotyped as female. - Brenda Frink, Stanford University

As late as the 1960s, many people perceived computer programming as a natural choice for savvy young women. Even the trend-spotters at Cosmopolitan Magazine urged their fashionable female readership to consider careers in programming. - Nathan Ensmenger, Historian
