Traditional Server: one Server one OS

Logical Partitioning: multiple OSs granularity based on physical CPUs

Micro-partitioning: virtual CPUs more OSs than physical CPUs resource allocation to OSs more granular up to 254 partitions per server

Page 33 Bull 2004

Micro-partitioning principles
Size and share of a micro-partition is in principal defined by the administrator through two parameters:
Partition share (weight)
Increments of 1/100 Minimum Partition size

Minimum assignable capacity of 1/10th of a processor, additional increments of 1/100 processor

Shared processor pool

Allows the Hypervisor to dispatch the partitions over several intervals/physical CPUs Min/Desired/Maximum

What Escala can do:

Today : Distributed
Many distributed servers badly utilized Distributed storage everywhere Networking gear (cables, routers, hubs)

Tomorrow : Virtualized
Virtual servers in a big box with much higher utilization rates Virtual storage connected to SAN Virtual networking between partitions

Towards a complete IT infrastructure in a box

Page 43 Bull 2004

Complete infrastructure in a box:

Greatly reduce the number of servers Greatly reduce adapters, switches, cables and disks Reduce floor space and power consumption Reduce management complexity and costs Introduce resource sharing to fulfill SLAs Increase availability and manageability
