No-Stretch 15-0-20

Intended to be used in the latter part of the

growing cycle, No-Stretch has a strictly engineered
composition designed to maintain compact sturdy
growth. Internodes are kept short by limiting
ammoniacal nitrogen and eliminating urea and
phosphorous. Increased potassium levels build a

Solubility is a sign of the quality and purity of

the materials used in creating fertilizer, helping
to ensure even distribution within your crops.
If a fertilizer is not completely soluble, material
may settle at the bottom of your tank and
create an imbalance of nutrients for your
plants. Since all of Plant Products fertilizers
stay dissolved, no deposits are left in tanks or
irrigation lines, providing you with versatility
in terms of the feeding program you use. We
at Plant Products Co. Ltd. pride ourselves
on supplying you with completely soluble
fertilizers, including our new line of fertilizer
Solutions.

This Higher Nitrate fertilizer is ideal for plants grown in soilless

media and forms the backbone of many greenhouse growers
nutritional programs. Over 60% of the nitrogen is in the nitrate
form, making it an ideal formulation for any time of the year
even during low light conditions. Use alone or in rotation with
Cal-Pot or Cal-Mag to provide a balanced fertilizer program.

The Cal-Pot Special is a completely water soluble prilled mixture of calcium nitrate, potassium nitrate and micronutrients.
With over 90% of the nitrogen in the nitrate form and no urea,
Cal-Pot is very effective under low light conditions. With a relatively high potential basicity this formula can be used to raise
media pH. Prilled form improves product owability.

Acid Fertilizer 21-7-7

This formula has a very high potential acidity. If used in a

continuous feeding program, the pH should be monitored
to ensure that it does not go below the desired level. It is
recommended for crops such as Azaleas, Rhododendrons and
many evergreens requiring acid soil conditions. When irrigation
water has a high pH 21-7-7 will help to overcome the effect of
the bicarbonate ions in the media and gradually reduce the pH
for better growth of bedding plants, pot crops, cut owers, and
nursery stock in containers and in the eld.

High Potash 20-5-30

This formula is recommended for summer feeding of roses,

geraniums and other ornamentals. Greenhouse tomatoes and
cucumbers grown in soil respond well to this formula when used
alone or in combination with potassium nitrate.
This high potassium fertilizer is ideal for use when plants are
maturing and blooming. It allows the plants to establish heavier,
thick-walled cells which results in good keeping qualities. Since
the potential acidity is very low, this fertilizer will exhibit minimal
acidifying activity in the soil. It is particularly useful where a
change in soil pH is undesirable.

Tested for Quality

At Plant Products Co. Ltd., our focus is on quality. The turbo

process permits strict control over solubility, soluble salts, pH,
colour, particle size, moisture and other important characteristics.
Samples are continuously monitored to ensure that all levels of
both major nutrients and minor elements are met and all other
specications are within our tightly dened limits.
Plant-Prod and Plant-Prod Solution Fertilizers contain only
nutrients normally required by plants. Undesirable elements
and compounds, such as chlorides which are common in many
high analysis fertilizers, are not found in Plant-Prod at agronomic
levels.

Plant-Prod vs Mixing your own

Fertilizer accounts for 1% to 3% of the cost of producing a plant. Simple mistakes such as
miscalculation, placing a decimal in the wrong place or an error in weighing out nutrients
could cause the loss of an entire crop. Using low quality raw materials which are not
completely soluble will reduce the availability of nutrients and could clog injectors. If the
nutrient does not dissolve into solution, the plant cannot utilize it. You may think you are
applying 200ppm but because some of the nutrients are insoluble, you may actually be
applying much less. A premixed soluble fertilizer such as Plant-Prod is economical.
Plant-Prod is scientically blended with the highest quality materials. Chances for errors
are eliminated.

Conductivity

Total soluble salts is a measure, in the form of electrical conductivity, of the amount of fertilizer in solution.
Most nutrients or other elements that are soluble will contribute to the conductivity of the solution. The electrical conductivity (EC)
increases as the fertilizer concentration is increased.
Electrical conductivity is measured in mhos. The conductivity of fertilizer solutions is sufciently small that
it is measured in terms of millimhos (mmhos, one one-thousandth of a mho) or micromhos (mhos, one
one-millionth of a mho). Conductivity meters measure in either mmhos or mhos. Since most meters used by
our growers are calibrated in mmhos, the data given here on our fertilizers uses the same measurement.
The following table can be used to measure the accuracy of fertilizer injector systems by following these steps:
(1) Take a conductivity reading of clear irrigation water.
(2) Take a conductivity reading of nal fertilizer solution.
(3) Subtract the conductivity reading value of clear water from the conductivity reading of fertilizer solution.
(4) Compare the answer found in 3 to the corresponding value in the table in order to nd the concentration of fertilizer.
Example: Conductivity of clear irrigation water is 0.60 mmhos.
Conductivity of the nal fertilizer solution using 20-20-20 is 2.85 mmhos.
The conductivity due to the fertilizer is only 2.85 mmhos - 0.60 mmhos = 2.25 mmhos.
For 20-20-20, a conductivity reading of 2.25 mmhos corresponds to a feeding rate of 550 ppm of Nitrogen (N).
Note: The values on this chart were obtained under laboratory conditions using distilled water and a Plant Products conductivity meter.
The values obtained by the grower under eld conditions could therefore vary slightly (+/-10%) from the values listed here.

If you are mixing your own media, you know how difcult it can be
to get a small amount of an input mixed thoroughly into the entire
batch. It is even more difcult with a continuous system where
peatmoss, perlite, bark and other components are being mixed
and then limestone and other nutritional products are being fed
into the mix.

Having insufcient quantities of a nutrient

in the soil can create deciencies in the soil, however,
having excesses of certain nutrients can also induce
deciencies of others as the chart indicates.
High root media levels of nutrients in the left column bring
about deciencies of nutrients listed in the right column.

Effects of pH on Availability
The effect of pH on availability of plant nutrients

This chart shows the relative availabilities of most plant nutrients at various pH levels.
The width of each horizontal bar indicates maximum availability at the widest point and diminishing availability as the
bar narrows.
Applying nutrients in the proper balance is essential for proper plant nutrition, but maintaining the pH of the soil
mix so that these nutrients are available for uptake is just as crucial.
From these charts it can be seen that an optimum pH in soil mixes is around 6.5 - 7.5, whereas the optimum
for soilless mixes falls in the 5.5 6.5 range.

PPM Explanation

Often in designing fertilization programs, the term ppm appears. Simply, this means Part Per Million.
One ppm of a certain nutrient, such as nitrogen, means that the solution contains 1 part of nitrogen
in 1,000,000 parts of water by weight. There is an easy formula which can be used
to determine the ppm of a solution.
grams of fertilizer product x grade of fertilizer x 10 = ppm
litres of water in solution
It works like this: Plant-Prod 20-20-20 contains 20% N. To nd the ppm of nitrogen in a solution
containing 1g of Plant-Prod 20-20-20 in 100 litres of water, the equation is:
1 (g of product) x 20 (grade of fertilizer) x 10 = 2 ppm
100 (litres of water)

One gram of Plant-Prod 20-20-20 in 100 litres of water has 2 parts per million of nitrogen in the
solution. To determine the number of grams required to make up a 200 ppm solution of nitrogen with
Plant-Prod 20-20-20 fertilizer in 100 litres of solution, simply divide 200 by 2. Your answer is 100 g.

Micronutrients

Plant-Prod Chelated Micronutrient Mix

Chelated Micronutrient Mix is a water soluble micronutrient mix

which can be used as a supplement where deciencies exist
for crops grown in soil or in a regular feeding program for crops
grown in articial and soilless media.
General Applications
1. Regular Feeding Program for Soilless Mixes or Substrates:
Use 3 g/100 L. For injector systems this can be maintained by
using 6 g/L for a 1:200 injector or 3 g/L for a 1:100 injector ratio.
For Agriculture Crops and Soil Grown Greenhouse Crops: Apply
when soil test shows low levels of trace elements.
2. To Correct Deciencies: The rate and frequency of application
should be based on results from soil and plant tissue analyses.
Foliar Spray: Apply 35 g/100 L covering surface lightly. Make one
or two applications as necessary.
Soil Application: Always apply trace elements to moist soil. Use
120 g/100 m2 in 450 L of water.

Controlled Release Fertilizers

Nutricote is the worlds most consistent controlled release technology. Nutricotes coating is a unique and pliable resin that allows
for very predictable release rates. Based primarily on temperature, the release rate of a specic coating Type (i.e Type 180) is highly
predictable. For example at a constant temperature of 25C (77F), Type 180 coating will release 80% of its nitrogen evenly over a 180
day period. Warmer temperatures will shorten release times and cooler temperatures will lengthen the release times. Moisture, pH,
soil type or microbial activity do not signicantly affect Nutricote technology.

Unique Nutricote Qualities

True control of nutrient release based on temperature

Optimum fertilizer levels are maintained since leaching of nutrients is minimized
Highest degree of crop safety
Flexibility of release periods from 40 to 360 days at 25C
Resin coating is very smooth and uniform with no breaks or cracked material which would allow uncontrolled release of nutrients
Thermoplastic coating wont break with blending or freezing
Uniform particle size allows easier and precise mechanical distribution
Only the highest quality N, P, and K
High nitrate nitrogen content

Nutricote Formulations and Types

Nutricote Controlled Release Fertilizers are available in four analyses. Each analysis has a range of release periods designated by
Type.
Analyses available:

The ideal slow-release fertilizer should offer you optimum control

over the rate of release to ensure that nutrients are supplied at
levels to match the growth of the plant. Nutricote does! Since
its moderately affected by changes in temperature, Nutricote
provides very precise and controlled release of nutrients during
the entire growing period.

Nutricote Total Features:

It is important to know the difference in

controlled release fertilizers.

Con
ve

Nutricote Total combines macronutrients, secondary nutrients

and micronutrients all in one prill. Every granule has the same
amount of fertilizer for even distribution throughout the growing
media. The release of all the nutrients in Nutricote Total is
controlled by temperature; faster release at high temperatures,
slower release at low temperatures.

End of Season

If a slow-release fertilizer releases too much of its nutrient content in the early stages of a plants life, it defeats its own purpose
since most of it is leached away before it can be absorbed by the
roots. Also, high fertilizer salts will begin to build up in the root
area long before any visible signs of damage occur. This can
lead to suppression of growth, delayed maturity and lost prot
potential.

Controlled Release Fertilizers

In addition to the following ACER products, Plant Products also carries ACER products for eld
nurseries. For more information about these or to answer any additional CRF questions please
visit our website at www.PlantProd.com or talk to your Plant Products sales representative now.

How it began

The ACER product line was developed by the team at Plant

Products with a lot of help from some of the leading nurserymen
in the business. To help kick start the process we held a focus
group of approximately 15 of the most innovative and progressive
growers we could nd, but there was a lot of brainstorming and
experimentation going on before that day in 2004.
The task at hand was to develop a product line that could match
the longevity, safety and reliability of a high quality controlled
release technology like Nutricote, but that could also release
some nutrition early in the season.

What does it mean for you?

Just like an umbrella keeps you dry no matter what the weather,
ACER brand controlled release fertilizers help you produce
quality plants year in and year out. No two years are alike
nowadays, could be hot and dry, could be cool and wet, or maybe
growing conditions might be letter perfect. In any of these cases,
too much or too little nutrient at the wrong time can set you back.
Under the ACER umbrella your plant nutrition will stay consistent.
I needed a long lasting fertilizer that could kick in
early and shut down, if it had to. ACERnt does
exactly that.

Why ACER?

Acer means the best of both worlds. The rst blended product
line on the market that contains Nutricote controlled release
technology.
(All ACER blends containing Nutricote are designated as
ACERnt brand). There is an ACER product to suit most
applications incorporated or topdress, cool climates or warm,
one season or two season fertility. There is also an economical
ACER blend for any time you need an all purpose topdress
material.

I will be honest...even this year, with all the rain

and the cool nighttime temperatures, our quality
hasnt skipped a beat. I still see no long growth,
and I dont want long growth.
Every day is a different day in horticulture. ACER lets us handle all of
that variability under one umbrella. It IS the way to go.

Pest Control
Safety

At Plant Products, we always put safety rst. In your

operation, please ensure you and your staff always exercise
the greatest care when using any pest control product.

Comparative Pesticide Toxicity

When it comes to safety, it pays to know the relative toxicity

of a chemical pesticide, known as its LD50. This is the amount
of the active ingredient of the chemical in mg per kg of body
weight that kills 50% of the test animals (usually rats). This
is commonly measured as acute oral LD50, which refers to a
single dose ingested through the mouth or nose. The chart
at right gives some of these values for often used pesticides,
listed by brand name with the active ingredient in parentheses,
followed by the chemical family code. The amount of active
ingredient in different formulations will affect the toxicity of
the nal product. This chart is useful for comparison only.

Resistance Management
For Western Flower Thrips

Why do I need to do this?

There have been many reports throughout the region of thrips populations that are not being controlled by registered insecticides.
Resistance can be a major reason for pesticide failure. To slow down the development of resistance, IPM strategies including rotation
of chemical products, timely sprays, introduction of benecial insects and the use of other tools such as trap plants, sticky tape and
insect screening, are recommended. It should be noted, however, that when we talk about pesticide rotation and other pesticide
use strategies, there are actually very few effective products available. Additional strategies, such as biological control, become
important if not imperative. An increasing number of growers have made the move to biological control of thrips and are achieving
good results.

What do I need to do?

Consult Suppliers, Extension Specialists and Consultants
Talk to growers who have used bios before and talk to those who work in the biocontrol industry.

Monitor Weekly

Monitor thrips population by counting sticky cards weekly

Use Trap Plants

Trap plants are useful either as a monitoring tool or as part of the thrips control strategy. Studies have shown that thrips can be more
strongly attracted to certain crops and varieties. Recent research supported by Flowers Canada has shown that chrysanthemum is
more attractive to thrips when compared to gerbera or eggplant (Shipp, et al., Final Report to Flowers Canada Ontario, May 2007).
The gure below shows the chrysanthemum variety Saskia planted as islands among other commercial chrysanthemum varieties.
The variety Saskia is very attractive to thrips in both the vegetative and owering stage. Research demonstrated that the use of
owering chrysanthemums as trap plants lowered the number of thrips in the vegetative stage of the crop and reduced thrips damage
(Shipp, et al).
Monitor trap plants weekly. Either release benecial mites on the trap plants to create a banker plant or replace the trap plants
weekly and use them strictly as trap plants. Banker plants have been used in the greenhouse to build up benecial insect populations.
Trap plants are particularly useful for trapping dispersing thrips, i.e. thrips on the move. Place trap plants close to intake vents, doors
and in thrips-problem areas.

Introduce Benecials at the Correct

Time

In contrast to chemical control of insect pests, biological

control must be implemented before the pest reaches a high
enough population to damage the crop. Release benecials as
early as possible.

Efcient Use of Chemicals, Where Possible, When Necessary

Whenever possible, spot treat affected areas or varieties only.

Rotate among different pesticide groups (listed in the table below) to reduce the chance of resistance to one product developing in
the population. Refer to Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, publication 370, Production Recommendations for Greenhouse Floriculture for
more details concerning specic recommendations. Consult product label before using any pest control product.
See Table 2 for Effects of Greenhouse Chemicals on Benecial insects

Other Methods of Control

Install sticky roller tape above crop for mass trapping.

Figure 6: Yellow
roller tape placed
above crop to trap
thrips and other
ying insects such
as fungus gnats and
shore ies.

If using parasitic wasps such as Aphidius spp or Encarsia, then hang blue roller tape. Blue roller tape will capture as many thrips as
the yellow roller tape, but will trap fewer benecial insects.
Screening vents. Although this method seems costly, growers who have installed screens
have observed a drastic reduction in insect pests.

37

What Can I Expect to See?

The adoption of biological control of thrips is a long-term solution, which is a different approach to pest control than strictly using
chemical insecticides. We have become accustomed to a formula which has worked in the past: nd thrips, spray thrips, kill thrips.
Employing all tools of Integrated Pest Management is just that: management, not eradication. It is not a quick solution, but a long-term
one. Be vigilant in monitoring other pests such as aphids, loopers and spider mites. Release benecials for these pests as soon as
possible.

Integrated Control Of Fungus Gnats

In Greenhouse Crop Production
As any greenhouse grower knows, Fungus Gnat larvae can cause damage to healthy roots
and cuttings. Larvae and adults can carry several root rot pathogens such as Pythium and
Fusarium, as well as Botrytis. Consumers can also be annoyed by ying insects if the adults
accompany a potted plant to the consumers home or ofce.

Identication and Life Cycle

Correct identication of this pest (Bradysia impatiens) is the rst

step in proper control.
The adult fungus gnats can be grey, dark brown or black ies.
They have long legs, long, beaded antennae and measure about
4 mm in length with a distinctive Y-shaped wing vein. Because
they are weak iers they can usually be seen resting on the
media. When disturbed they will y just above the surface of the
media.
They feed on decaying organic matter and algae found on
growing media or under benches and prefer moist conditions.
The adult lives 7-10 days. Mated females lay 75-200 (average
150-170) white-creamy eggs on the soil surface or any other
organic matter that is present in the greenhouse. These eggs,
depending on temperature, will hatch in 3-6 days.
The larvae have white, transparent, or slightly translucent, 4-6
mm long bodies with 12 abdominal segments and shiny black
heads. They feed on decaying organic matter and the young
roots and root hairs of plants. Larvae pass through four stages
and they mature in about 2 weeks, at which time they spin a
pupal case from soil debris and silk.
The pupae, 2-2.4 mm long remain immobile in the soil for 4-6
days. The complete life cycle occurs within 21-25 days at 24oC,
38 days at 16 oC.

Damage

Fungus gnats are common in any greenhouse crop where

conditions are moist and the organic content of the growing
media is high. Cuttings and plugs are particularly susceptible.
The damage that results from fungus gnats can be both direct
and indirect. The larvae feed on the roots and root hairs of
seedlings, callus and roots of cuttings and young plants, and
tunnel into plant stems. This damage provides an entry point
for various root rot organisms while the adults carry pathogens
throughout the greenhouse. Root rot may result in poor or
stunted growth, and discoloured, and ultimately dropping, foliage.
Plant symptoms may include:
general wilting/stunting of plants
leaf yellowing/nutrient deciency symptoms
failure of cuttings to root

Control

In general, control of fungus gnats is difcult because of the

soil and above-ground stages and the continuous overlapping
generations. Combining cultural, chemical and biological control
is the most effective way to control this pest.
Early detection and environmental management is the key to
successful control of these pests.

Monitoring

Yellow sticky traps placed either horizontally (sticky side up) on

the surface or vertically within the plant canopy will monitor the
population of adult ying insects and allow for early detection and
correct identication. Larvae can be detected by placing potato
pieces on or slightly in the growing media.

Cultural Practices

Proper greenhouse sanitation is an important aspect of cultural

control. Elimination of weeds and algae in and around the
greenhouse is useful. This can be facilitated by maintaining a
layer of sand or gravel or a hydrated lime slurry under benches.
Because the fungus gnats breed in moist areas, improving
drainage and modifying misting and irrigation schedules will
reduce populations. Avoid overwatering and collection of
stagnant water in low places. Potting media should not be stored
where it can get wet and attract fungus gnats.
Pasteurize and sterilize any potting media that is to be reused, or
that has been exposed to the environment.

Biological Control
Hypoaspis

(for preventive and low level populations)

Hypoaspis sp., a tiny mite (less than 1mm in size), is a native
soil mite that can adapt to a variety of different growing media.
It feeds on young fungus gnat larvae, springtails, thrips pupae
and other small soil insects in the upper few centimetres of the
media.
Hypoaspis is a preventive measure and best used before fungus
gnats populations are well established. It will build up in the
media, in moist areas, by feeding on algae and other organic
matter. Applied early enough, Hypoaspis will multiply to provide
control of the larval stage of the gnats when they appear. The
Hypoaspis population is self-maintaining, therefore, unless
damaged by pesticide sprays, one application will provide
season long control of fungus gnats as well as develop a resident
population in the greenhouse for longer term control. A native to
Canada, Hypoaspis tolerates cold temperatures but is inactive
below 14C.
This biocontrol agent is compatible with all other insects and
mites used for biological control and is protected from the effects
of foliar-applied pesticides as long as there is no direct spraying
of the media. The effect of fumigation is not well known but
could be expected to be harmful to mobile stages.
Application: This biological agent should be sprinkled over
the soil immediately after planting or to the propagation media
before sticking the cuttings. The rate is 100 mites/m2. One tube
containing 10,000 Hypoaspis will conver 1000sq.ft. while the
tube containing 25,000 will cover 2500sq.ft.

39

Atheta coriaria

Predatory Rove Beetle

This rove beetle is an efcient predator of the soil-inhabiting
stages of pests such as shore ies, fungus gnats and western
ower thrips. Adult Atheta beetles are dark brown to shiny black,
3 to 4 mm long. It has three larval stages during which the
larvae change from white to brown. Adults can y through the
greenhouse which ensures good distribution and fast population
development.
The rove beetle can complete the egg to adult cycle in three
weeks at 25C. After that period the adult will be active for about
three weeks.
Both the adult and the larvae will search for eggs, young larvae
and pupae of the fungus gnats and shore ies, as well as thrips
pupae.
Application: The rove beetle can be applied to different media,
such as peat, coconut bre, rock wool etc.
Beetles will establish and persist under commercial conditions
within 3 weeks of release. It should be introduced at a rate of
least 1 predatory beetle per 10 ft 2.
Compatibility:
Citation (cyromazine) is compatible with all stages of Atheta.
Dimilin is harmless to Atheta adults but harmful to larvae and
pupae.

Steinernema feltiae

(Nemasys, BB Steinernema system).

Benecial Nematodes for medium to high population levels.
Entomopathogenic nematodes, such as Steinernema feltiae,
are tiny multicellular worms that live in soil and are particularly
effective against the larvae of fungus gnats and thrips pupae.
Once applied to the media, the nematodes do not kill the pest
directly but enters the larvae and releases a bacteria. The
bacteria multiply rapidly, infecting the larvae which then dies of
bacterial septicaemia.
Nematodes will have their greatest impact within the rst week of
application, however, under suitable conditions, they may live in
the media for extended periods. Most soil-applied pesticides are
not harmful but should be avoided for the week before and after
an application. Nemasys is compatible with other biocontrols.
Application: Nematodes are an excellent biocontrol, even when
fungus gnat populations are well established. For best results
apply as soon as possible after potting or placement in the
greenhouse. Apply at a rate of 1 x 50 million pack per 100m2. For
heavy infestations on highly susceptible crops, such as poinsettia
cuttings, apply Nemasys at one pack per 50m2. At least 100L of
water should be used per 100m2 of treatment area. It is important
to remove all screens and lters from the sprayer. If this is not
possible then the mesh size should be 50 mesh or coarser,
otherwise clogging may occur. Nematodes have no effect on eggs
or adult fungus gnats therefore, reapplication may be necessary
to control newly emerged larvae. Media must be kept moist and
warm, between 10-30C, for best performance. Irrigate treated
area within 30 minutes after application with sufcient water to
move the nematodes from the leaves to the soil/media surface
and keep soil moist for 14 days after treatment.

40

Vectobac 600L

Biological Larvicide (Bti)

(for medium to high population levels)
Vectobac 600L is a liquid formulation of Bacillus thuringiensis
israelensis, Serotype H-14, also known as Bti. This is a
spore-forming bacterium found in most soils around the world.
Susceptible larvae in the soil ingest the Bti where the alkaline
condition in the insects gut activates a toxic protein. Death will
occur within 24 hours. Effective only in an insects digestive
system, Vectobac 600L is harmless to humans and other
mammals. It is also harmless to benecial mites and insects
typically used in biological control programs while extremely safe
to plants. Vectobac 600L is registered for use on greenhouse
ornamentals, vegetables and herbal bedding plants.
Very alkaline water should be avoided as this will tend to activate
the toxin prematurely. Materials containing Copper or Chlorine
are incompatible with Vectobac as well.
Application: Vectobac 600L must be applied as a drench to the
media when the larvae are present. It does not control adults.
If an infestation is heavy then the rate should be 4-8 L in 1000L
of water applied to wet the soil surface on benches and under
benches if larvae are there.
For best results, the media should be moist. Do not irrigate
excessively subsequent to application or the material may be
washed out. Vectobac 600L does not have a long residual activity
in the soil. If all stages of the fungus gnat life cycle are present
in the greenhouse then repeat applications at the lower rate (2-4
L per 1000L of water) should be made at weekly intervals to
maintain control.

Chemical

There are very few registrations of chemical controls against

fungus gnat larvae, and none for the adult stage.
Citation 75WP is an insect growth regulator registered for use
on greenhouse ornamental crops and can be applied as a foliar
spray or as a soil drench. All surfaces where fungus gnats may
breed could be sprayed, including potting media surfaces, bench
tops, undersides of benches and areas under benches which may
be contaminated with potting media or algae.
Dimilin is also an insect growth regulator registered for use on
greenhouse ornamentals. As with Citation, Dimilin is active only
on larval stages of fungus gnats. It could be applied as coarse
spray to the soil surface or as a soil drench.

Integrated Control Strategy

To achieve the best control of fungus gnats an integrated pest

control program should be implemented. There are a variety
of tools available that will improve pest control, minimize pest
resistance and crop risk. A comprehensive strategy is outlined
below:
establish a regular monitoring program for early pest detection
and identication as well as for monitoring the pest life cycle and
degree of control.
minimize algae accumulation through careful irrigation and
misting practices.
introduce Hypoaspis at seeding, sticking or planting out, if
pesticide use (for other pests) is not expected to be high. Suitable
for vegetables and ornamentals.
control established populations in any crop with Nemasys or, in
ornamental crops, with Vectobac 600L.
apply Citation or Dimilin to ornamentals if necessary.

Biological Control

Biological controls are becoming increasingly popular with growers of a wide range of crops. Safety issues are non-

existent and protective clothing is not required. There is no re-entry interval, no phytotoxicity and the chance of a pest developing
resistance to a biological control program is also non-existent.
Your staff and your customers will feel better about a product that is produced using a responsible and environmentally friendly
integrated pest management strategy.
Biological controls are best introduced before pest populations reach a problem level. Unlike chemical controls that will have an
immediate knockdown effect, biological controls are better used to prevent a pest infestation. Care also needs to be taken to ensure
that chemicals with long residual periods have not been used before bios are introduced.
Plant Products is determined that our customers will have access to the best biological controls available, along with technical sales
representatives and technical support staff that will help you choose the best plant protection products and strategies possible.
Our technical staff can help with crop specic or pest specic recommendations, and when you need to be a little more aggressive in
your integrated program we can help choose the products with the least impact to your biological controls.

Not all products are registered for all crops. Please consult the label for the specic crop being grown.

Resistance Management:

When a pest or disease is exposed to a pest control product, some individuals in the problem
population are likely to survive and will pass on their genes to the next generation, resulting in an
increase in the tolerance or resistance of the population to later applications of the product.
In order to maximize and maintain the value of products it is important to follow the Resistance
Management recommendations that are found on product labels. In general no more than 1 or 2
applications of the same product should be made before switching to one from a different family.
For fungicides it is important to use multi-site products in rotation rather than relying on single site
mode of action products. Do not exceed or reduce the recommended rate nor exceed the number of
applications allowed per crop cycle.

Plant Growth Regulators

B-Nine WSG (daminozide)

B-Nine is the original safe and reliable plant

growth regulator for use on Chyrsanthemums,
Azaleas, Bedding Plants, Poinsettias and
Hydrangeas. Stems are stronger and leaves are
greener and more drought resistant.
This formulation of B-nine is 85% daminozide in a
water soluble granule that is easy to handle and less dusty. Use
at between 0.15% and 0.75% (1500-7500 ppm) depending on
the crop and desired response.
Item 20343 ............................................................500kg
Item 20344 .............................................................. 10kg

Bonzi (paclobutrazol)

Bonzi produces plants with shorter internodes, more branching,

improved root development and deeper colour. It is taken up
quickly by stems and roots with complete absorption occurring
within minutes of application. The effects are long lasting in the
plants allowing for fewer applications. Registered crops include
numerous bedding plants in plug trays, cell packs and pots.
Item 20345 .................................................................. 1L

Sumagic (uniconazole-P)

Sumagic is registered for Poinsettias, Easter

Lilies Chrysanthemums, and many bedding
plant species including Geraniums. It is
extremely active, retarding growth almost
immediately after treatment.
It is readily taken in by stems, roots and to
lesser extent leaves. Careful attention must
be paid to spray volume to achieve maximum
uniformity. A strong effect will result when spraying young
plants or plants with a small leaf area and greater exposed
media surface. Sumagic is best applied in the morning or
evening when plants are not under stress.
Item 20092 .................................................................. 4L

Fascination

(benzyladenine and gibberellins)

Fascination decreases yellowing and necrosis of lower

leaves and delays ower senescence in Lilies.
Item 20080 ...............................................................2L

Piccolo (paclobutrazol)

Piccolo offers control of height and radius across a wide range

of ornamental crops. Piccolo has given excellent results with
leading Canadian and US growers and has been proven in extensive university research trials. Registered on several bedding plant and plug species, Piccolo is one of a relatively new
class of plant growth regulators the triazoles. Piccolo preduces
plants with shorter internodes, more branching, improved root
development and deeper colour. Because Piccolo is so active
at low levels, the rate must be very accurately measured. It is
readily taken in by stems and roots so careful attention must
be paid to spray volume to achieve maximum uniformity.

Ethrel (ethephon)
a

Ethrel is a growth regulator used in major horticultural

crops and cereals. It promotes ripening in tomatoes,
reduces curing time and promotes colour development
in ue-cured tobacco, accelerates fruit maturity in
apples and blueberries and loosens mature fruit from
the stem in cherries for easier harvesting. In cereals,
Ethrel is used to reduce lodging.

Stim-Root

Stim-Root
The successful Hormone formula that stimulates
rapid rooting of cuttings.
Stim-Root is Plant Products proprietary rooting hormone. Used
and trusted by generations of growers, Stim-Root has been
relied upon to help cuttings establish quickly.
Indole-3-butyric acid or IBA, is the active ingredient that
encourages the cutting to develop roots when it otherwise
would not. Plant Products offers Stim-Root as a powder in 3
different concentrations, and as a liquid solution in 3 different
concentrations. Simply dip the lower of the cutting, tap to
remove excess powder or liquid and stick the cutting.

Stim-Root Rooting Powder

Stim-Root #1
0.1%IBA is ideal for softwood cuttings and easy to propagate
plants.
Item 10634 ................................................................. 500g
Item 10635 ................................................................. 10kg
Stim-Root #2
0.4%IBA is ideal for semi-hardwood plants, for rooting woody
and semi woody plants and easy to propagate evergreens.
Item 10638 ..............................................................500g
Item 10639 .............................................................. 10kg
Stim-Root #3
0.8% IBA is ideal for hardwood plants and for rooting difcult
to propagate plants such as evergreens and dormant leaess
cuttings.
Item 10642 ..............................................................500g
Item 10643 .............................................................. 10kg

Stim-Root Liquid

Liquid Stim-Roots effectiveness comes from higher

concentrations of IBA, more uniform application
to cuttings, and better penetration into woody
cuttings. Better rooting than with powders, occurs with many
hard-to-root species. The carrier used has greater potential to
burn than the powder, so a trial on a small number of cuttings
at different concentrations is always recommended.
Item 10623 ............... Stim-Root Liquid - 2500ppm - 1L
Item 10625 ............... Stim-Root Liquid - 5000ppm - 1L
Item 10627 ............... Stim-Root Liquid - 10000ppm - 1L

Mycorrhizal fungi form a symbiotic relationship with the roots

of many species of plants. In this relationship the fungi draws
moisture and nutrients to the roots of the plant, and the host
plant in turn provides carbohydrates for the fungi.
Use of Mycorrhizal inoculants improves the quality and
resistance of plants, resulting in reduced losses of container
and eld grown nursery crops, and quickens establishment of
new turf as well as greater drought and stress resistance.
Mycorrhize are naturally occurring soil organisms but may not
be present in tilled or compacted soils, or in soilless growing
media. Premier Tech Biotechnologies have invested many years
in identifying the species of Mycorrhizal fungi most benecial
to Turf and Horticultural crops, and to developing methods
of producing and delivering these Mycorrhizal inoculants
to market. While some species of plants will not form
relationships with Mycorrhizal fungi, many others will derive
varying benets from being grown with these inoculants.
Broadly there are 2 types of Mycorrhize. The ectotrophic
Mycorrhize grow between the cells of the root but do not enter
the cells, and are primarily of value to woody plants. The
endotrophic Mycorrhize actually penetrate into the cells of the
roots of their host and predominantly form relationships with
herbaceous plants including turf grasses, although some
woody species do benet from endo myke.

Shading
Mardenkro provides environmentally friendly
products for your greenhouse shading needs.
At Plant Products Co. Ltd. we supply the
following Mardenkro products.

ReduSol

ReduClean

ReduHeat

Available from Continental:

Kool Ray Classic

ReduSol was specially developed for applications in which a

shade coating must remain on the greenhouse throughout the
season. It provides a white, even coating which can be easily
removed at the end of the season.
Dilution rate of 1:1.5, one 20kg bucket is sufcient to cover
approximately 250 square metres.
Item 50139 .............................................................. 20kg

The newest Shading Agent from Mardenkro BV, ReduHeat

allows greater passage of Photosynthetically Active Radiation
(PAR) than traditional shading agents, while effectively reducing
the amount of heat. Use of a pigment to block the heat radiation
instead of chalk that is used in conventional shading, has the
advantage of providing a higher quality of transmitted light. The
higher ratio of red to far red light has a major impact on photomorphogenetic processes within the plant ensuring robust plants
with reduced stretch.
Like ReduSol, ReduHeat is easily removed with ReduClean in the
same manner.
One hectare requires 1,500 to 2000 litres of spraying solution.
The dilution ratio is 1:2 for a shading effect of of 40%, resulting in
60% light transmission.
Item 52314 .............................................................. 15kg

Reduclean makes removing ReduHeat and ReduSol easy. It is

economical and has a negligible corrosive effect when used
according to instructions.
Dilution rate of 1 part ReduClean to 7 parts clean water. Add
ReduClean to the water while stirring.
Item 50409 ................................................................ 10L
Item 50410 ................................................................25L

Kool Ray is used to lower the temperatures inside greenhouses

in the warm spring and summer months.
