The Context of White Supremacy hosts the 6th study session on Gary Rivlin's Katrina: After The Flood. Mr. Rivlin is a White man; while working for the New York Times he covered the infamous engineering failure and negligence that obliterated New Orleans in August of 2005. His 2015 bestseller documents ten years of lopsided "recovery." To be explicit, a decade of black New Orleanians being racially dislocated and willfully blocked from rebuilding their lives. Rivlin investigates all areas of people activity: the institution of charter schools, the destruction of public housing, and outright looting of funds designated for flood victims. Last week's session described the childhood Alden McDonald and his wife, Rhesa, and the evolution of their marriage. Rivlin details the genisis of Liberty Bank and gruesome task facing the bank in the wake of Katrina. We also learned about Joseph Canizaro and other Whites who seemed eager to transform black neighborhoods into "green spaces."
