Significance of the Study

Gardeners, especially farmers will have an

idea if mixing unused powdered charcoal (Carbon Sulphate Oxide) affect the height of a plant or crop in particularly a Oregano plant (Origanum Vulgare) so as to discover a way to grow their plant in a shorter period of time without tampering the crop or the plant itself.

7/18/12

Objectives
Learn how to measure the height

of the Oregano plant before, during and after experimentation

Compare the growth of the

Oregano plant with and without the presence of charcoal in its soil
7/18/12

Problem Statement
The purpose of this study is to

determine the effect of charcoal on the height of an Origanum Vulgare plant.

7/18/12

Hypothesis
Mixing charcoal on the soil has no

significant effect on the height of an Origanum Vulgare plant.

Procedure
The materials needed for the experiment were

gathered.

The fifteen medium sized pots were labeled

with a masking tape

and a marker as follows A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, B1, B2, B3, B4, B5 and C1, C2,C3, C4, C5.
30g of loam soil was put in each pot. 7/18/12

Procedure (con't)
The soil in experimental set-up A was mixed

with 20g of powdered

Charcoal and the soil in experimental set-up B was mixed with 10g of powdered charcoal. All soil were mixed with a small garden shovel with the use of the small garden shovel.
Pots C1-C5 were labeled as the controlled set-

up and was mixed with 0g of powdered charcoal.

7/18/12

Procedure (con't)
At the end of each week, the plant with the

closest

measurement to the average height of each set-up was taken a picture with the use of a digital camera.
Steps 9 to 11 were repeated daily in a span of

two months only

Analysis of Data
We found out that charcoal does affect the

height of a plant. We have noticed that the plants in both experimental set ups grew slower than of the plant in the controlled set up. However, we have discovered that the presence of charcoal in the soil made it compact does making it have a lesser chance of eroding.

7/18/12

Sources Of Errors
We did not put a stick beside the plant to

support it.

We did not crush the charcoal thoroughly.

We mixed too much charcoal to soil.

We mixed the charcoal in the soil.

7/18/12

Conclusion
We therefore conclude that charcoal has a

significant effect on the Origanium Vulgare plant. We also reject our hypothesis which states that Mixing charcoal to the soil has no significant effect to the growth of an Origanium Vulgare plant. because charcoal slows the growing of the plant in terms of height.

7/18/12

Recommendation
We recommend that the people who will plan to do this experiment is to :
a. Change the plastic cups (pot) to a clay pot

for it to be more environmental friendly

b. The experimenters can choose upon a

variety of plants especially orchids which is a plant normally seen with charcoal as its soil.
