CSR: An Assessment

CSR in Policy
The Companies Bill 2011 proposes that
Every Company having
(a) A net worth of Rs.500 crore or more, or turnover of Rs.1000 crore or more (b) a net profit of Rs.5 crore or more during a year

mandatorily has to ensure that every year at least 2% of its average net profits during the three immediately preceding financial years shall be spent on CSR activities

CRITIQUE
Greenwashing: environmentally conscientious acts with a greater, underlying purpose of profit increase The concept is impossibly vague CSR is not socially responsible its an operating tax

CSR takes support of nonprofits out of the realm of good business and into the anti-business
Companies have a fiduciary responsibility to stockholders

Misused as a means of political influence

Focus on showcasing the CSR activities rather main work -Cause Marketing : Link purchase of a product to charity (ITC)

The Way Forward

Policy level changes
Unambiguous scope and definition of CSR Link different CSR programs for synergy Collective action in sharing resources, knowledge and skills

Emphasize environmental sustainability in CSR activity at the policy level Promote equity in development of various regions instead of clustered approach of development Collaboration among the various stakeholders involved in CSR
