WORLD GEOGRAPHY
What is GEOGRAPHY?
Geography is the science that deals with the distribution and arrangement of all elements of the earths surface. The word geography was adopted in the 200s BC by the Greek scholar Eratosthenes and means earth description. Geographic study encompasses the environment of the earth's surface and the relationship of humans to this environment, which includes both physical and cultural geographic features. Physical geographic features include the climate, land and water, and plant and animal life. Cultural geographic features include artificial entities, such as nations, settlements, lines of communication, transportation, buildings, and other modifications of the physical geographic environment.

Solar System: The Earth

Among the known eight planets in the Solar System today, only the Earth is proven to be habitable by human life. Physically, its is 70.78% water known as the Hydrosphere and 29.22% land known as the Lithosphere and is covered by a blanket of air called the Atmosphere.

The Earth: Atmosphere

One of the basic parts of the Earth is its atmosphere. It is compose of different layers that comprise its structure which is determined by the distance from the earths surface and the temperature at that certain layer.

The Earth: Hydrosphere

Another part is the hydrosphere. It comprise the largest percentage of the earths surface. Hydrosphere covers all bodies of water of the earth and is sustained due to a process called the Water Cycle.

The Earth: Lithosphere

Another part is the Lithosphere. It comprise the lesser percentage of the earths surface. Lithosphere covers all land forms of the earth and is caused by different natural earth-activities such as earthquakes and continental drift as well as movement of tectonic plates.

LITHOSPHERE: Land Masses

There are different land masses that comprise the lithosphere. Some of this are big while others are small. Such land masses are called land forms and are classified according to their characteristics such as structure and land area. Some are: 1. Plain 2. Mountain 3. Valley 4. Hill 5. Island 6. Peninsula 7. Plateau 8. Continent, etc.

LAND MASSES: Continent

Continent is one of earths largest continuous unit of landmass. Today, we have 7 continents namely: 1. Africa 2. Antartica 3.Asia 4. Australia 5. Europe 6. North America 7. South America

CONTINENT: Europe
Europe is one of the seven continents of the world. Though considered as a continent, Europe is actually just the western fifth of the Eurasian landmass, which is made up primarily of Asia. Geographers generally describe the Ural Mountains, Ural River, part of the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus Mountains as forming boundaries between Europe and Asia. The name Europe is thought to be derived from Europa, the daughter of Phoenix in Greek mythology, or Ereb, a Phoenician word for sunset.
