BRITISH CINEMATOGRAPHY

The British cinema has had a major influence on the development of both technological and commercial and artistic films and is one of the most respected film industries around the world..

Silent Films Modern cinema is generally seen as a descendant of the work of the Lumire brothers in France in 1892, which first shows came to London in 1896; however, the first pictures with movements developed on celluloid were made in Hyde Park, London, 1889 by William Friese Greene.

The first British films had often a melodramatic tone and there was a preference for arguments that were already known to the audience, in particular, adaptation of Shakespeare's plays and novels of Charles Dickens.

In the 20's, the British Cinema was poor and suffered the effect of contracts with the Americans (block booking and blind booking) was the first country to take measures against it.

In the 30's and Alfred Hitchcock worked in England already, in 1929 he made there his first sound film and a series of works - "39 Steps" and "The Man Who Knew Too Much" are the most representative.
