According to Giri , Trade union is a voluntary organization of workers formed to promote and protect their interests by collective action. It is formed for the purpose of regulating the relation between workmen and employers or between employees or for imposing restrictions on the conduct of any trade or business.

Safeguard the workers against all sort of

exploitations by employer. Attempt to secure fair wages. Take up the individual and collective grievances of the workers. Organize strikes and other form of protests to press the demands of the workers.

Make arrangements for the education of the

workers and their family members. Provide recreation, sports and other welfare facilities for the members. Serves as a link between the employers and employees to develop mutual understanding and co operation.

Craft union: Workers in a particular trade or occupation, due to their identical skills and training join together. It possesses a strong bargaining power. Eg: lawyers, doctors, etc. Industrial unions: It is organized upon an industry wise unions. Its members belong to different works within same industry. It is more powerful because it contains all types of both skilled and unskilled workers.

General union: It consists of workers employed in different industries and crafts within a particular region or city. For example, Jaipur labour union Federations: These are national level bodies in which craft, general and industrial unions are affiliated. The y act as coordinating agencies. For example, All India Trade Union Congress

Widening unionism in unorganized sector and in

small towns. Membership should be increased. Minimum subscription should be increased at a considerable rate to improve financial stability. The principle of One union in one industry must be followed in every industry.

Leadership must be developed in every worker. It will

help to eliminate party politics and outsiders.


Recognition of unions is necessary for all unions

employing more than 100 workers.


Full time paid officials should be appointed to manage

the affairs of trade unions. They must be competent and sincere.
