What are ethics, morality and business ethics? Answers to these questions can be found in the detailed definitions of these terms. People may think they know the meanings of these terms, but actually they do not (Avelini Holjevac, 2002).

Ethics
Ethics (Greek ethos custom, habit, significance, disposition) teaching doctrine on morality; its task is not only to inform us with what morality is, what its basic components are, but also to take a critical disposition towards the existing moral practices; Because ethics are community rules governing interactions between people, unethical behaviour is that which can hurt or harm another in the community. The goal of ethics is not only to identify all the various views of people but also to give an evaluation and identify real and true values.

Ethics
Ethical one referring to ethics; informal one who is honourable, morally correct, honest, who distinguishes good from evil, etc. (Klaic, 1979). An ethical person is therefore likely to be aware of the inter-dependent nature of behaviour and the consequences on others of behaving unethically. Unethical behaviour alters and upsets the balance of interactions in a community such as a workplace; if a manager or supervisor takes a self-serving position on an issue, a negative consequence may be generated for staff.

An unethical act or practice implies knowledge of this potential for harm, such as that caused by taking money from a guests room, or food prepared for a special occasion.
Good ethical standards rely on principles, values, duties and obligations.

Morality
Moral (Latin moris custom)

Ethics and Morality


Ethics are a system of rules and principles relating to good and bad, or duty and obligation, and morality relates to principles of right and wrong (Nusbaum, 1992). An ethical decision will therefore be acceptable to the wider community (Kohlberg, 1981), whereas morality requires the sanction of an individual conscience.

Importance of business ethics?


It is sure that ethics are a dimension of TQM, as well as a dimension of the quality of a community and the quality of life and work. The main goal of managers is to generate profits, but only within the legal framework and bearing in mind the rule: Never cheat the customer. Business ethics prescribes profit making, but with respect for ethical principles and standards.

The very term Hospitality implies welcome, friendliness, comfort, security, openness, communicativeness and kindness. The aim of the Hospitality Industry is to please people, to give them the sense of well-being that everybody wants. This is what connects this industry and ethics as defined by Aristotle.

However, honesty should be an integral part of the managers personality, something taken for granted, and should be reflected both in his day-to-day decisions and in his behaviour not only towards his employees and business partners but also towards his family and society as a whole.
