Creator of the Mouse

DR. DOUGLAS C. ENGELBART

Earned Ph.D. at University of California 1957 Researcher at Stanford Research Institute Came up with the idea as a student

Having equipment measure the area of a two dimensional chart 8/18/12

THE CREATION

Before Mouse, the only way to move cursor was by using arrow keys 1963 Engelbart invented the Mouse 1964 Engelbarts colleague, Bill English, built the first prototype

FIRST WORKING MOUSE

Wooden Box Had button on top and two wheels inside at right angles Wheels took measurements by rolling one wheel, while dragging the other at a right angle Calculated the 2-D area

WORKING MOUSE

Information sent to computer and shown on screen as cursor moving Cord originally attached to the back got in the way Switched it to the front

8/18/12

GETTING ITS NAME

Engelbart called it the XY Positioning Indicator Because it measured the X and Y axis to move the cursor He thought the public would give it a dignified name A colleague thought it looked like a mouse and after that it was referred to as a Mouse.

EXPERIMENTATION

Same time as Mouse development, other devices were being made. Ex: Knee Switches (top) and Light Pens (bottom)

8/18/12

EXPERIMENTATION

Engelbart received a grant from NASA to test and compare the devices Wanted to determine which device could do the task the fastest and most accurate Mouse won the experiment

8/18/12

PUBLIC DEMONSTRATION

December 1968 Fall Joint Computer Conference First public demonstration of mouse Also demonstrated remote network, shared-screen collaboration, video conferencing, hypertext, and interactive text editing Known as Mother of All Demos Received a standing ovation

EVOLVING THE MOUSE

Bill English continued the development of the Mouse Replaced wheels with steel ball This Mouse was first used with Xeroxs Alto computer in 1975

8/18/12

XEROX COMPUTERS

Only 100 Alto computers sold Not a big success Very slow Extremely expensive Xerox Star sold for $16,595 Caused Mouse to be unsuccessful too BUT, they heavily influenced Microsoft and Apple

8/18/12

Xerox Mice were expensive $350 to $400

EXPENSIVE TO CHEAP(ER)

Were too complicated for a mass production Steel ball held in place by metal assembly Required exact alignment with rollers and springs to work

Collected dirt from places it rolled on 8/18/12 bad performance =

EXPENSIVE TO CHEAPER(ER) Steve Jobs asked design team to

make a mouse that Apple could sell for $15 Replaced steel ball with floating lead ball in rubber Made a precision injectionmolded ribcage to hold all internal mechanics Mouse production became a cheap, snap-together process

8/18/12

IMPROVING THE MOUSE

Went through a variety of shape changes From box like to more rounded shape Needed to accommodate user comfort Improved accuracy by moving ball Originally in the back of mouse

Moved it to the front, closer to users fingers 8/18/12

MOUSE IS COMPLICATED

Early 1980s, public thought it was hard to use Apples computer manuals contained chapters on how to use the mouse Needed to convince public it was easy to use Slogans: If you can point, you can use a Macintosh. Encouraged practicing using a mouse before dismissing it

8/18/12

MOUSE IS COMPLICATED

Microsoft included games to play specifically to learn how to use the mouse Notepad a mouse based text editor Piano an on screen piano Doodle drawing program The mouse tutorials, games and chapters in the manuals continued into the 1990s

MICE OF TODAY

Today we have a variety of mice: Wireless/Bluetooth Different shapes Different sizes Lasers vs. balls Can work on glass

ENTERING NEW REALM

Apple Magic Mouse

Introducing Magic Mouse. The worlds first Multi-Touch mouse. The purpose of this mouse is providing a more ergonomic experience by letting the user decide where the button should be.

TRUE EVOLUTION

Celluon has taken the concept a step further removing the handheld device altogether, turning your desk into a virtual touch screen. The evoMouse is the evolution of the computer mouse.
