Introduction
In young women who have abortions, according to researchers, mostly

from groups who already have emotional problems from the start.
Abortion was associated with high rates of negative emotional

reactions; however, nearly 90% of respondents believed that the abortion was the right decision in young girl who has unwanted pregnancy. 1

Introduction
Abortion is the removal of a fetus or embryo from

the uterus before it is viable. Viable means 24 to 25 weeks pregnant or baby weight less than 500 g. Abortion occurred in reproductive age from 1840 years. 1

Etiology
Why do women have abortions? The case originated from Unwanted pregnancy abortion in young women: Outside marriage - Pregnancy outside of wedlock - Cases of rape and Free sex, - Not able to have a child. 2 In marriage - Not ready for economic and social problems - Baby defects - Just a child2

Impact to Health
Abortion has a high risk to health and safety of a

woman. There are two kinds of health risks to women who have abortions: 1. Physical Disorders 2.Mental Disorders

Physical Disorders
Bleeding severe 2. Infection and septicemia 3. Intoxication

Mental Disorders
Below are the symptoms that describe post-abortion

syndrome : Guilty Anxiety Psychological "numbing" Depression and thoughts of suicide Eating Disorders Alcohol and drug abuse Reactive psychosis. 4

Guilty
For the woman who has come to believe, at some point

either before or after the abortion, that she consented to the killing of her unborn child, the burden of guilt is relentless. 5

Anxiety
Anxiety is defined as an unpleasant emotional and

physical state of apprehension that may take the form of tension, physical responses, worry about the future, difficulty concentrating and disturbed sleep. The conflict between a woman's moral standards and her decision to abort generates much of this anxiety. 5

Psychological "numbing"
Many post-abortive women maintain a secret how that

they will never again allow themselves to be put in such a vulnerable position. They may work hard to keep their emotions in tight check, preventing themselves from feeling the pain of what has happened, but also greatly hampering their ability to form and maintain close relationships. 5

Alcohol and drug abuse


Alcohol and drug use often serve initially as a form of self-

medication--a way of coping with the pain of the abortion memories. The woman who resorts to alcohol and/or drugs eventually finds herself having not only more problems but also fewer resources with which to solve them.

Reactive psychosis
Rarely, a post-abortive woman may experience a brief

psychotic episode for two weeks or less after her abortion. The break with reality and subsequent recovery are both extremely rapid, and in most cases the person returns completely to normal when it is over. 5

Treatment
Non medication Cognitive Therapy Cognitive behavioral treatment or CBT of depression

involves the application of specific strategies directed at the following three domains: cognition, behavior and physiology. In the cognitive domain, patients are taught to correct their negative thinking. In behavioral domain, patients learn activity scheduling, social skills and assertiveness. In physiological domain patients are taught relaxation techniques, meditation and pleasant imagery to calm themselves. 6

Medications
Depression : Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors /

SSRI ex. Sertraline (Zoloft) The typical Zoloft dose for adults with depression or OCD is 50 mg once daily. 3
Anxiety : Benzodiazepine.3

Conclusion
Abortion is the removal of a fetus or embryo from

the uterus before it is viable. Abortion in young women has a risk disruption of mental and physical health. The symptoms such as depression, guilty, upset, and loss. It take a psychological approach to helping mental health problems and family support. Prognosis for this patient ad bonam.
