Set Your Mind on the Things of God

Mark 8:31-38
31 And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 And he said this plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man." 34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

35 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. 36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? 37 For what can a man give in return for his soul? 38 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels."

Set your mind on the things of God.


Mark 8:31-38

31 And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again.

And he said this plainly (i.e., not in parables). And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

Why does Peter react this way?

His brash outburst expressed not only presumption and misunderstanding, but also deep love for Jesus. - Dr. John MacArthur

Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man. - Jesus (Mark 8:33)

It is the will of God for Jesus to die on the cross.

Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know this Jesus, delivered up according to

the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the
hands of lawless men. - Acts 2:22-23

The things of God may not always be what we think is the best.

Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man. - Jesus (Mark 8:33)

And Jesus asked them, But who do you say that I am? Peter answered him, You are the Christ. - Mark 8:29

At one instant, you could be setting your mind on the things of God. But in the next moment, you could be setting your mind on the things of man.

Set your mind on the things of God.

What are the things of God?

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. - Isaiah 55:8-9

His Wishes

The Word of God is the definitive list of the things of God.

We should read through and study the Word of God in it's totality...

...so that we don't overemphasize on some things and underemphasize on other things.

What are the things of God?

The mind of God or the will of God is ultimately the things of God.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable if anything is excellent or praiseworthy think about such things. - Philippians 4:8

One of the wishes of God is that we deny ourselves, take up our crosses, and follow Him.

One of the wishes of God is that we lose our lives for His sake and for the gospel's sake.

Set your mind on the things of God.
