WORK INSTRUCTIONS FOR CAPILLARY BLOOD GLUCOSE MONITORING

1. Carefully read the pack inserted that came with the test strips and the lancing device.

Thoroughly wash and dry the site you intend to collect blood from, any moisture remaining can dilute the blood and so produce may give an incorrect result. 3. Check that the correct date and time are displayed. 4. Do not carry out any test if the code no in the display is not the same as the no on the test strip pack. Incorrect coding produces incorrect result. 5. The flashing drop symbol is to indicate that to apply a drop of blood (within 2 minutes). 6. Massage a finger tip to stimulate the circulation and make blood collection easier 7. Use the lancing device to prick the side of the fingertip which was managed. 8. Without pressing too hard, collect a small drop of blood 9. Apply the areas of blood on to the middle of the orange coloured square application area (pad). It is O.K. to touch this area when applying blood, but do not attempt to spread the blood. If the amount of blood is not sufficient you may apply a second drop within 5 seconds. 10. Your glucometer beeps briefly (provide the beep tone is enabled) to acknowledge application of blood and to announce the start of testing. Mask sure you do not move the test strip during testing, or an incorrect result may be obtained 11. The hour glass symbol indicates that testing is in progress. 12. The monitor beeps again after about 5 seconds signal that the test is complete. The result appears in the display and is automatically saved together with the date and time. 13. Remove the test strip from the monitor, which will now automatically turn off. 14. Defined range (10-600 mg/d2) values outside this range will be displayed as Lo meaning the result is less than 10 mg / dL or Hi meaning the result is greater than 600 mg / dL. If you have applied too little blood, please repeat the test with a new test strip. 15. Verbal order is only followed for anti-diabetic drugs and in emergency cases 16. Finally the diabetic order is written in the diabetic chart and the read back policy is followed.

6. Inform the duty doctor. 7. Assist the doctor for physical examination including per vaginal examination. 8. Do skin preparation and give proctoclysis enema as per the doctors instruction. 9. Administer medication as per the doctors order. 10. Watch for uterine contraction (duration & frequency) and document, monitor FHR frequently, and document. 11. Prepare the delivery trolley with aseptic method. 12. Assist the consultant for delivery. 13. Baby will be received by Neonatal doctor and nurse and show the baby to the mother immediately and the sex of the baby will be identified by the mother. 14. Put the ID band to the baby as per sex with date of birth and time. 15. Assist the consultant for post delivery procedure. 16. Watch for bleeding and uterine contraction and record. 17. Record the delivery notes and make the patients comfortable. 18. Document in the birth register.
