Pronouns I.O.P.
p. 199
Indirect Object Pronouns (I.O.P.) have
similar forms as the Direct Object
pronouns (D.O.P) but are used differently.
Remember that the Direct Object nouns
and pronouns are the “what” or the “who”
of the sentence.
Indirect Object Pronouns on the other
hand tell “to whom” or “for whom” an
actions is performed.
Generally speaking, when it comes to
I.O.P, there is something being received
by the IOP. (gift, permission, etc.)
Singular Plural
Te (to/for you)
Le (to/for him, her, you formal) Les (to/for them, you guys)
I.O.P.
For example
Él me da la muñeca.
He gave what? = la muñeca = D.O.
To whom? (who receives the doll?) = me
(to me) = I.O.P
I.O.P
Because le and les have more thatn one
meaning, you can make the meaning clear
by adding
◦ a + name, noun or pronoun
◦ Lolita siempre les decía la verdad a sus padres.
◦ Lolita siempre les decía la verdad a ellos.
I.O.P.
Like direct Object Pronouns and reflexive
pronouns. I.O.P. are also placed before
the conjugated verb or attached to the
infinitive.
Siempre le quería comprar dulces a su hija.
Siempre quería comprarle dulces a su hija.
I.O.P.
Sentences that have an indirect object usually
have a direct object. Remember, the IO tells us
where the DO is going. Notice how the sentences
below just wouldn't work without a direct object.
He gives María . . .(the book, the pen, the
diamond, etc.)
He buys me . . .(flowers, candy, an
ironing board, etc.)
I.O.P.
Sometimes the direct object is not stated;
rather it is implied, or understood.
My mother writes me every week.
DO=letter (understood)IO=me(My mother
writes me a letter every week.)
She told him.DO=it (understood)IO=him
(She told it to him.)
I.O.P.
Identify the subject, verb, D.O, and I.O. of the
following sentence and translate.
Ella siempre le compra dulces a su hija.
