Total Physical Response

Create by James Asher

One of the basis.

The fasted, least stressful way to achieve understanding of any target language is to follow directions uttered by the instructor (teacher), without native language translation.

The teacher gives a command in the target language and performs it with the students

Meaning in the target language can be communicated through actions. Memory is activated through response

The students dont speak. Understanding of the target

language should be developed before speaking

The teacher gives the commands quite quickly

Initially students can learn one part of the language rapidly by moving the body

TPR was developed in order to reduce the strees people feel when they are studing a foreign language. Teachers who use TPR believe in the importance of having their students enjoy their experience in learning to communicate in foreign language.

The teacher is the director of all student behaviour. The students are imitators of an unverbal model. Some student will be ready to speak after 10 to 20 hours of instruction.

In the first phase the teacher gives commands to a few students, then perfoms the actions wtih the. In the second phase the students show that they can understand the commands by performing them alone. After learning to respond to oral commands the students lear to read and write them When they are ready to speak they can command the activity.

In TPR we use imperatives because of their frequency of occurrence in the speech directed at young children learning their native language.
Understanding the spoken word should procede its production. The spoken is emphazised over written language.

TPR is usually introduce in the students native language. After introduction rarery would the native language be used. Meaning is made clear through body movements.

Evaluation
Teachers will know immediately if students understand by observing students actions. A formal evaluation could be command every student to perform a serie of actions.

Errors
It is expected that students will make errors when they first began speaking. Teachers should be tolerant and correct only major errors
