The need for progress is clear

How many are the Kilowatt-hours wasted each year by consumers due to insufficient power usage information?
Water

Energy grid

Carbon emissions

Chemicals Energy sources Smart home

How big is the impact on many municipalities water supply due to leaky infrastructure?
Energy

Water: What should we be focusing on?

AGRICOLTURE

WATER MANAGEMENT

HOUSING

PIPES

October 8, 2012

Agricolture

Today
Waste of water due to leakages and evaporation

Tomorrow
Digital empowering of the farmer Efficient pipes

October 8, 2012

Pipes maintenance

Usually municipalities estimate how many pipes need replacing, based on age, soil type, load history and incident statistics. But the actual condition is mostly unknown

Where should we inspire us?

Boston

Using sophisticated acoustic sensors the city of Boston has been able to save more than three million gallons of water a day by detecting leaks early.
October 8, 2012 7

Technology involved

- Stethoscopes-like devices that are pressed against the asphalt to hear leakages - Miniature sensors that are inserted into the water mains, flow with the water, and hear leaks as small as a quarter of gallon per hour

Pinpoint the exact location of the leak!

Domestic water

Greywater recycling
Greywater could be recycled, separated from black water and used for other functions (e.g. watering the garden)

Smarter energy

Why are we focusing on this issue more and more? - Society is realizing oil cannot play a major role in the future - Level of technology at disposal opens new possibilities in energy management - The economic downturn is making people more aware of their spending habits, energy is a core issue

Bergamo consumption for category

Agriculture
+ Industry + Service + Domestic

83,7 GWh 5.229,2 GWh

1.553,2 GWh
1.237,1 GWh

13

Future perspective

Energy consumption is estimated to be doubling by 2050

What should we be focusing on?

- Smart grid - Energy consumption of public structures - Household energy management
October 8, 2012 14

Smart Grid

The flow of electricity from utility to consumer becomes a two-way conversation

The consumer becomes a supplier and has the possibility to sell its energy back to the grid

October 8, 2012

15

How is Bergamo moving?

Take advantage of the smart meters installed in Bergamo. Speed up the awareness and the potential benefits of these devices.
October 8, 2012 16

Smart Home

Consumption
Space heating/cooling 50% Water heating Appliances Lighting Others 14% 13% 13% 10%

17

Smart Apps

Every electronic activity in the house could be simultaneously under control combining smart meters and smartphone apps.

The challenge is to make these services affordable

October 8, 2012

18

Smarter illumination

Municipalities should set the right path

The public lighting system could be restructured using LED technologies, this would allow an energy saving up to 40-70% compared to conventional devices
