Wellness Lesson!

This class (not just the wellness book) made me realize that Im setting myself up for failure, eating the types of foods I was eating. Wellness book showed me how much I relied on fast foods. Whole food sources are the way to go! Eating a well balanced meal is very important. Taking supplements to make up for my terrible diet is a bad idea. Protein is the least of my nutrient worries. Always keep in mind what kind of food Im putting in my body! Learned about the power of nutrition.

What is Tuna?
Also know as Tunny A large and predatory schooling fish of the mackerel family Usually very fatty fish Tuna meat isnt white like all the other species of fish The tuna meat is actually pink. One of the worlds most consumed types of fish Certain types of tunas cant be consumed due to high mercury content (ex. Children & pregnant women) 9 Different species of tuna exist

Brief History Lesson


Industrial tuna fishing began in the 1950s High demand initiated putting the tuna in cans In the beginning the industry consisted of fishermen in: Japanese long liners, bail boats in the pacific, and of course the United States fishermen. As centuries past more methods of tuna fishing came about. The Tuna fish industry grew!

Present Day Tuna Fishing


Tuna was first only fished in the Pacific Now it has spread to the Indian sea and even all the way to the Atlantic Majority of tuna fish are still caught in the Pacific. 60% are caught in pacific coast 15% from the Western Atlantic fisheries 20% in the Indian sea

How are tuna caught?


Fishing Methods Fish farming (cage system) Long line fishing Purse seines (60%) Pole & line Harpoon gun Big game fishing Usually Caught During warm water seasons Beginning months in June schools of fish come to the warm waters of the California shores Usually caught 40-70 miles off the coast Some tuna such as the blue fin tuna is caught during deep sea fishing excursions (300-800 pound tuna)

After Tuna Are Caught:


Delivered to canneries or fish processing facilities Go through a very detailed processing procedure

Grouped by size and weight Taken out of the freezers and thawed in large water tanks They are steam baked at a certain temperature and time depending on size Steam baking makes it easy to take skin and bones off the tuna After the skin and bones are taken off the tuna are cooled and sanitized They are then incinerated and sealed into cans

Tuscan Style Tuna Salad Recipe


Great Source of protein added to any meal!

Ingredients
2 6-ounce cans chunk light tuna, drained (see Note) 1 15-ounce can small white beans, such as cannellini or great northern, rinsed 10 cherry tomatoes, quartered 4 scallions, trimmed and sliced 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1/4 teaspoon salt Freshly ground pepper, to taste 2 lettuce rolls

Tuscan Style Tuna Salad Recipe


Preparation
Combine tuna, beans, tomatoes, scallions, oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper in a medium bowl. Stir gently. Refrigerate until ready to serve. When ready to serve wrap in lettuce

Conclusion
Before doing my research on this super food, I never knew how difficult it was to catch tuna. It is easily accessible to us, which made me believe that it was easily caught. I can now appreciate the process by which this food is brought to our table. It also made me think about how long the process must be for all foods to find their way into our kitchens.
