Environmental Conditions

That Affect the Health:

Its Implication to the
Academic Performance
of the Pupils

A Thesis Presentation By:

Overview

This research
described the
environmental
condition of the
Balumbato Elementary
School with regard to
noise, air, water, and
soil pollution.
02/08/09 2
Using primary and
secondary data as
the results of
laboratory analyses
provided by the
DENR-EMB, and
Bureau of Soils and
Water Management.

02/08/09 3
It also identified the
causes of these
environmental
problems, the effects
on the health and the
impact on the
academic
performance of the
pupils as perceived by
the respondents of
the study.

that:
“the most common
factors which
affect the learning
process are the
intellectual,
physical,
emotional, and
social factors that
may be found in
the individual
himself.”

Learning is effective when
the learner utilizes
more senses.
The combination of
seeing and hearing with
touch, taste, and smell
will facilitate the
learning and
understanding of the
learning situation.
The use of different
senses will also add
effectiveness in causing
learning to be
meaningful and

The success of a school
system could be measured
in terms of pupils’
academic performance with
a clean and safe
environment where
learning takes place.
Hence, the school as an
agency in the community
has the responsibility in
improving the
environmental conditions.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

 Balumbato Elementary School has the

least number of pupils.
 The school premise is a quite bigger
than its enrollment, it is composed of 23
competent teachers. A number of the
faculty is Masteral and PhD degree
holder, thus holding the highest
teaching positions.
 In spite of these qualities, problems with
respect to academic performance of
pupils are perceptible.
02/08/09 12
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
Other than mass demolition,
it is suspected that the
environmental conditions
surrounding the school
cause poor academic
performances of the pupils
and the transferring of
pupils to the nearby schools.

02/08/09 13
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Is there really pollution existing in

the community?
 What could be the possible effects
to pupils’ health, which in turn
affects their academic
performance?

•Part One (1) described the environmental
condition existing at Balumbato Elementary
School and its vicinity. It is followed by the
causes of the apparent degradation of the
environment as perceived by the respondents.
•Part Two (II), the respondents’ perceptions on
the encountered effects of the ecological
conditions are presented.
•Part Three (III) deals with the common
diseases contracted by the pupils that are
postulated to be attributable to the varied types
of pollutants and effluents in the surroundings.

SUMMARY, FINDINGS,
CONCLUSION AND
RECOMENDATIONS

02/08/09 20
Findings:
   Noise pollution
The examination of the
data revealed that at the eight
designated points, all the
arithmetic medians exceeded
the maximum allowable noise
level.

02/08/09 21
Findings:

Air Pollution
 The air around the locale is
considered polluted based on the
report “Stations General Air Pollution
Assessment 2000-2001”.
The mean of the pollution index
reached 336, the highest mean from
among the twelve (12) stations in
Metro Manila.

Importance of the
Study
This study may provide general
knowledge and information regarding
air, noise, and water pollution and its
implication to the environment, their
effects brought about by these
environmental conditions on the health
and the academic performance of the
pupils.

02/08/09 24
Importance of the
Study
the writer expects that the totality
of the efforts of those who will be
utilizing the result of this study
may lead to the improvement of
the environmental conditions of
Balumbato Elementary School;
upliftment of the health of the
pupils and eventually the
development of their academic
performance.

Conclusion
 Prevalent pollution problems around
Balumbato elementary school and its
proximate neighborhood were air and
noise pollution.
 Water samples from MWSS tap from
Balumbato elementary school canteen
and new bldg. Were analyzed as safe

 The fertility rating of soil was generally
adequate/favorable.

Conclusions
Predominant factors
that contribute to
the existing
environmental

nearby factories
and temperate
weather.
02/08/09 47
Conclusions

Majority of the consequential

effects caused by the various
pollutants in the locals affecting
the pupils used were perceived as
“alarming”.
Common diseases related to the
pollution problems were brought
into the body by way of the
“respiratory system”.
02/08/09 48
Conclusions

Temperate
weather and
noise pollution
were found to
significantly
correlate with
academic
performance of
the pupil
respondents.

Conclusions
On the whole, the
findings on the effects of
the existing
environmental conditions
at Balumbato elementary
school and its
surroundings were on
varying degrees of
influence on the health
and academic
performance
