The exhibit of 300 dresses and rare archival materials, celebrating the 45 years of creativity of Valentino. Unlike many Italian fashion houses, which are based in Milan, Valentino has been associated with Rome since its first showing in the city in 1962.

The exhibit developed inside and around the Ara Pacis, the altar among the most significant evidences of art in Augustus age, symbol of peace and prosperity, and it created an exact chronological perspective, visible to passers by on the outside to emphasize the relationship between Valentino and Rome

Valentino, Retrospective: Past/Present/Future is a major exhibition that encompasses haute couture from the first collection designed in 1959 by the houses founder, Valentino Garavani, through to work from the Autumn/Winter 200910 creations by Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli.

The exhibition, organized by The Costume Institute, celebrated the late Alexander McQueens extraordinary contributions to fashion. From his Central Saint Martins postgraduate collection of 1992 to his final runway presentation, which took place after his death in February 2010, Mr. McQueen challenged and expanded the understanding of fashion beyond utility to a conceptual expression of culture, politics, and identity. His iconic designs constitute the work of an artist whose medium of expression was fashion.
