A group of words that make complete sense, is called a sentence. e.g. Little Jack Horner sat in a corner. Kinds of sentences: there are 4 kinds a) Those which make statements or assertions(Declarative or Assertive) e.g. Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall.

b) Those which ask questions.(Interrogative) e.g. Where do u live? c) Those which express commands, requests, or entreaties(Imperative) e.g. Be quiet or Have mercy upon us. d) Those which express strong feelings(Exclamatory) e.g. How cold the night is! What a shame!


When we make a sentence 1) We name some person or a thing. 2) Say something about that person or thing. Hence we have a subject to speak about and we must say or predicate something about that subject. e.g. The boy stood on the burning deck. On the top of the hill lives a hermit.

1.The singing of the birds delights us. 2.He has a good memory. 3.The earth revolves around the sun. 4.Here comes the bus. 5.Nature is the best physician. 6.No man can serve two masters.

Words are divided into different kinds of classes, called Parts of Speech , according to their uses;that is , according to the work they do in a sentence . The parts of speech are eight in number: NOUN ADJECTIVE PRONOUN VERB ADVERB PREPOSITION CONJUNCTION INTERJECTION

A Noun is a word used as the name of a person , place or thing. e.g. Asoka was a wise king. Common Noun-is a name given to every person or thing of the same class or kind. Proper Noun-is a name of some particular person or place. Collective Nouns-is a name of a number or collection of persons or things taken together and spoken as one whole. E.g. A fleet , An army , A herd etc

Abstract Noun-is usually the name of a quality , action or state considered apart from the object to which it belongs. e.g. Quality-goodness , kindness , whiteness , honesty , bravery etc. Action-laughter , theft , hatred , movement etc. State- childhood , youth , sleep , death etc. Countable Nouns-names of objects , people we can countbook , pen , boy , horse , doctor etc. Uncountable Nouns-names of things which we cannot countmilk , oil , sugar , gold , honesty etc. Countable nouns have plural forms , uncountable nouns do not.

Masculine Gender-A noun that denotes male animal. E.g. boy , lion etc Feminine Gender-A noun that denotes a female animal. E.g. girl, lioness etc Common Gender-A noun that denotes either male or female. E.g.-parent , child ,enemy , baby , monarch etc Neuter Gender-A noun that denotes a thing that is neither male or female (thing without life). E.g. book , pen , room , tree etc.

Singular Number-A noun that denotes one person or thing. E.g. boy , tree, box , bird etc Plural Number- A noun that denotes more than one person or thing. E.g. boys , trees , boxes , birds , etc.
