Relative clauses replaced by participles and to infinitives
1. Present participle: V-ing
E.g.1: The man is my brother. He spoke to John. The man who/that spoke to John is my brother. who/that spoke speaking The man speaking to John is my brother. E.g.2: The boy who is playing the piano is Ben. who is playing playing The boy playing the piano is Ben.
Notes: Use a present participle to replaced a relative clause which has an active meaning and the relative pronoun is the subject.

EXERCISE 1: Rewrite the following sentences, using a present participle phrase

EXERCISE 2: Rewrite the following sentences, using a past participle phrase.

1. I come from a city that is located in the southern part of the country. I come from a city located in the southern part of the country.

2. They live in a house that was built in 1980. They live in a house built in 1980.
3. They work in a hospital which was sponsored by the government. They work in a hospital which sponsored by the government.

EXERCISE 3: Rewrite the following sentences, using an infinitive phrase


1. The last person who leaves the room must turn off the lights.
