Why MLA? What is MLA?

MLA stands for Modern Language Associate and follows a specific structure/format for specific subjects MLA allows the reader to easily cross reference your sources. (In other words, is it
real? Is it accurate? Is it current?)

Proper MLA citation also helps you avoid plagiarism. MLA is made up of two parts: 1. direct quotations (you are repeating another source word for word) 2. work cited page Titles are centered on the first page, not in bold or italicized If the paper is longer than one page your last name needs to be placed in the top right hand corner next to the page number

What Quotes will look like:

When you quote an author or researcher in your paper you must use quotation marks around what it is they said. At the end of the quote you will have parenthesis with the authors last name and the page number this tells the reader what page the information you used appears. Example: According to Washington, Abraham Lincoln is often quoted as saying, one can never trust the internet or its sources (Blooms 75).

For quotations that are more than four lines of verse or prose: place quotations in a freestanding block of text and omit quotation marks. Start the quotation on a new line, with the entire quote indented one inch from the left margin (one tab); maintain double-spacing..

Help! I have two authors with same name!

If your paper has two sources by authors with the same last name you have two choices, include the author's first name in the text or the parenthetical citation (parenthesis): Example using the authors name in your paper: Tom Peters talks about a company that facilitates employees' renewal by shutting down its factory for several hours per week while teams work through readings on current business topics (57). Example using the author in the parenthesis: a company that facilitates employees' renewal by shutting down its factory for several hours per week while teams work through readings on current business topics is the challenge for many CEOs (Peters, Tom 57). On your work cited page use the first letter of the authors first name to determine which author will go first in your list of references.

Work in an anthology, article in a collection, chapter of an edited book: Last name, First name. "Title of Piece." Title of Collection. Ed. Editor's Name(s). Place of Publication: Publisher, Year. Page Range of Entry. Medium of Publication.

Article in a Reference Work: Title. Title of Reference Work. Ed. Editors Name. Number of Edition (if given). Vol. Volume Number (if given). Place of Publication :Publisher, Date. Medium of Publication.
