The Dichotomy of Inquiry (Project) Based Learning

When is it the right time to be Pragmatic Vs. Metacognitive

HTH Experience: http://inewtoneducation.blogspot.ca/

A means to promote Student Engagement. How I use it and how you use it will be different. What does IBL look like ? Delivery methods:

Story, Argument, Reflection Research Explorative Discovery Encourages and Promotes Creative thinking on task, on subject content And many more.

Assessment methods: (Presentation of Learning) Focus on Formative but still retains Summative qualities.

Reflection Story Argument Test (written & verbal) Interview & Dialogue. Other(many.. Limited only by Your imagination) The professional Assessment skills of the Teacher become critical to assigning a grade. In some cases it could be done by a panel of reviewers.

Consider for a moment. 1) Why do we do the things we do in our classroom?

2)

What makes a good teacher? What makes a good student?

3)

My Driving Question! When will what we know change what we do?

Lets name some High-Yield Instructional Strategies Identifying similarities and differences Summarizing and note taking Reinforcing effort and providing recognition Homework and Practice Nonlinguistic representations Cooperative learning Setting objectives and providing feedback Generating and testing hypothesis Questions, cues, and advance organizers

What are they? An online exhibition/presentation of student learning through reflective communication. It is: A demonstration of learning through metacognitive processes. A place of higher/deeper learning Professional A representation of what the student wants to be recognized for not necessarily others expectations

It is Not: A place to submit homework A place to have open dialogue (although it often encourages it)

Examples: HTH San Diego. RHSS Aviation 12.

To be added Your School Your Class

Why? Whats in it for me? the teacher They hit on almost every aspect of the High Yield Instructional Strategies Work is Front End Loaded. Your learning curve and the students need to learn how to communicate reflectively. It gets easier And student learning vs. instructional effort becomes leveraged. You accumulate exemplars and enhances future student growth. And On and On.

Why? Whats in it for me? the student Seed the internet with positive professional identities and information. Provide future employers/teachers/registrars information to review that demonstrates your growth. Professional Online Biography (Resume like.. But only biographical) Out-Going Information only. Can be amended and changed as required. Provides History of Learning Easy to adapt to your Exhibition of Learning style.

What did the students say I thought it was just more work to do (at first), but then it became something I liked because it was different from other classes... Especially in Science (Karandeep,G) It made me think about how and why the stuff we were learning is applied in the real world outside the classroom (Hunter, S) I wasnt sure at first. I didnt like it. But I realized what Mr. Newton was saying about Reflections and because I could present it in anyway I wanted I learned to appreciate Aviation (the subject) a lot more (Renan, G) Being able to present my work like this is so much easier. But at first I really didnt like it because I have never used a Blog before (Kody, J)

For a teacher: 1. Establish Rules upfront. Clear and Concise 2. Have Exemplar's ready to show and provide students with links, pictures, etc 3. Make your own and DO IT FIRST.
Create an outline handout for number 1.

Heres How.
