History of Advertising.

Functions & Effects of Advertising. To identify products & differentiate them from others. To communicate information about the product, its features & its place of sale. To induce consumers to try new products and to suggest re-use. To stimulate the distribution of a product. To increase product use. To build value, brand preference and loyalty. To lower the overall cost of sales.

Functions of advertising.... The history of Advertising is divided into three (3) distinct periods. (a) Pre-industrial Age. (b). The industrializing Age. (c). The Industrial age. Pre-industrial Age: As the marketplace grew larger & became more complex, he demand for products increased and the need for advertising slowly developed. Advertising started with signs & symbols so that passers-by could see. ( As most people couldnt read).

The evolution of advertising

Later the Chinese invented paper & Europe had its first paper-mill by 1275. Johannes Gutenberg in 1440s invented the printing press in Germany 7 with that grew advertising. Printing enabled facts to be established, to be substantiated, recorded & transported & from then, people didn't need folklore & oral literature any more.

History of Advertising In 1472 the first ad in English appeared a handbill tacked on church doors in London announcing prayer book for sale. Advertising grew through 1700s to 1758s when advertisements in Americas were common.

The industrializing Age: In the mid- 1700s the industrial revolution began in England and by the early 1800s, it had reached North America. Machines replaced animal power, mass production of goods with uniform quality & large companies increased their productivity. For the first time, it cost people less to buy a product than to make it themselves & as rural urban migrations began, mass urban markets emerged fuelling mass productions the resultant growth of advertising.

The industrializing Age..........


This age lasted until the First World war & was categorized with mass production of goods etc. (Pioneers like Volney B. Palmer in Philadelphia in 1841, by 1869 21 year old Francis Ayer set up an advertising agency in Philadelphia and named it N.W Ayer & Sons Technological; advances: Photography introduced by 1839, magazines ads emerged, the telegraph, telephone, typewriter, the rail-road, phonograph and later motion picture allowed human beings to communicate like never before. Literacy rate increased in many countries People could read & understand advertisements.

The Industrial age:


- Started around the turn of the 20th Century and lasted well into the 1970s a period marked by tremendous growth and the maturation of the worlds industrial base. - At about the same time, radio was born & became the worlds primary means of communication. Coupled with print media ads, we now had radio commercials. - With the introduction of TV in 1941, advertising grew though it grew fastest after the 2nd World War and even achieved its current status as the largest advertising medium. Names like Leo Burnett, David Ogilvy, Bill Bernbach, Rosser Reeves of Ted Bates Agency
