30.1 Intro.
Why was there so much creative energy during the Renaissance? Much creative energy during the renaissance b/c people were educated in many different areas.

30.2 How Did the Ren. Spread Through Europe?


Ideas were spread from Italy through trade, travel, and education. Ideas spread rapidly due to the invention of the printing press with removable type by Johan Gutenberg. What do you think was another result? With more material available, more people began to read.

30.3 Who Was Michelangelo?


Who was he? He grew up a troubled youth who lived with the Medicis for a while. What kind of artist was he? Known for combining ideal beauty with emotional expressiveness. What were his best known works? Best known works were: ceiling of Sistine Chapel, Pieta, Moses, David.

30.4 Who Was Titian?


He was the master painter of Venice. Developed a free style using blobs of paint to create vivid forms, colors, and textures. Created paintings depicting myths and Bible stories. Became the court painter of Italy. Who did he paint portraits of?

30.5 Who Was Albrecht Durer?


Studied with a famous painter and printmaker. What do you think he placed major importance on? Placed major importance on human proportions. Developed style in which he blended detail with idealized beauty he learned from Italians. Very skilled at making woodcuts and engravings. Where do you think these would end up? Wrote many books about human proportions in art.

30.6 Who Was Copernicus?


What did he do? Hes the father of modern astronomy. How did he study astronomy? Skilled in math and observation. What was his greatest achievement? Studied the motion of the planets and observed that the Earth rotates on its axis and revolves around the sun. Published findings in Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres. Why would the church forbid people from reading it?

30.7 Who Was Vesalius?


Who was he? Hes the father of modern medicine. How did he study the human body? He observed and dissected human bodies. What did he learn? He discovered that the heart has 4 chambers, and the construction and functions of the human body.

30.8 Who Was Isabella I?


She helped unify Spain. Married Ferdinand of Aragon and then b/c queen of Spain. What were they responsible for? They encouraged exploration. Funded Columbus voyage to the new world in 1492. What was the result? Brought great wealth to Spain. Guess what else they were responsible for Unified Spain by kicking out the Jews.

30.9 Who Was Elizabeth I?


One of Englands most popular monarchs of all time. Englands Golden Age. Reigned for 45 years and never married. Why? She was strong, able, flexible, and willing to change unpopular policies. What did her subjects call her? How did she contribute to the Renaissance? She supported theater, fashion, dance, literature, and education. She helped make England rich and powerful.

30.10 Who Was Shakespeare?


Who was he? Began as an actor, and then wrote plays that were often performed at the Globe Theatre. One of the greatest poets and playwrights of all time. Had deep understanding of human behavior and emotion. Wrote many love poems, tragedies, and comedies. What were some of his most famous plays? What were common themes in Shakespeares writing?

30.11 Who Was Cervantes?


He was a soldier, prisoner, and possible criminal. What did he write? Wrote plays, poems, and novels. What did he have a particular talent for? Had a talent for satire, which was demonstrated in his masterpiece Don Quixote. Whats Don Quixote about? Don Quixote is considered one of the greatest novels ever written.

30.12 Who Was Leonardo?


What did Leonardo study? As a teen studied under a master painter in Florence and studied art, music, math, anatomy, botany, arch., and engineering. Drew precise drawings of people, plants, animals, and ideas about geometry and mechanics. What types of things did he design? Designed weapons, buildings and machines. What was his most famous work? Most famous work was the Mona Lisa.
