> The town was the site of a great Buddhist stupa originally built during the reign of emperor Ashoka. It was completed in 200 CE om and is decorated with carved panels which tell the story of Buddha's life. >It consists of an anda,egg or dome of about 50 m in diameter risiing to height of 30 m. >A terrace or medhi 5 m high from the ground was added forming a separate ambulatory or pradakshina path about 2 m wide. >The upper part of the doe was plastered and ornamented with a garland like while the tri ratna and poorn kumbha ornamentions.
>One notable featur of this stupa is the improvement in the architectural appearance by providing a rectangular platform(Aryaka) to the base of the dome at four cardinal points.
