In the Beginning

debatable that AS Douglas created the first video game that runs on a computer at Cambridge university.* However other sources say that the first video game ever created was tennis for 2 created by Willy Hinginbotham at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, played on an oscilloscope it was used to entertain guests at the lab.* Steve Russell created Space war in 1961 and it was the first game that was created for computer use*

Onto the Big Screen


1968

1967, Ralph Baer wrote the first video game played on a television set and called it Chase. It was played on the prototype of what was to be the first video games console, the Oddyssey and known at this stage as the Brown box* which could be hooked up to a TV, and coincidentally was also designed by Ralph Baer. There were six games that could be played on the Oddyssey, including a light-gun game where a separate gun accessory that detected light allowed players to shoot things on screen.

was taken from an arcade game and turned into a console game. A series of Magnavox Odyssey consoles were produced quickly after each other with only slight modifications. The first in 1975, then 1976 and finally in 1978.

Midway introduces the first game in an arcade that keeps score and displays the highest ones in 1978, it was called Space Invaders.* In 1980 Mattel creates the Intelivision* and its the first real competitor of the Atari 2600. It has better graphics than Atari's 2600, but a higher retail price ($299). Battlezone is first 3-D game ever created in 1980 . It is set in a virtual battlefield and was later enhanced by the U.S. government for training exercises. 1980 also saw the invention of Pac-man from company Namco Cinematronics debuts Rick Dyer's Dragon Lair, the first video game to feature laser-disc technology. In 1985 Tetris was released by Russian Alex Pajitnov and was to be played on a PC.

Moved from cartridges to discs The first 3D graphics were seen from Phillips but the standard and controllers of the game were terrible. Nintendo's NES is released in the U.S. in 1986 after being test-marketed in NY one year earlier. Nintendo releases the handheld Game Boy for $109 in 1989. Atari tries to enter the handheld market with the Lynx, a colour handheld console retailing for $149 also in 1989 In 1993 Atari released the Jaguar, attempting to be the first 64-bit console on the market. The product actually runs two 32-bit processors. 1995 Sony brings the PlayStation to the U.S. and sells the console for $299 and the Nintendo 64 was released in Japan and a year later in the US.

The New Era

The virtual pet Tamagotchi is released in 1996 and became an instant hit. In the year 2000 the sims is released and become the best selling computer game in 2002. Microsoft and Nintendo introduce their nextgeneration systems within days of each other in 2001. Microsoft claims its Xbox offers "the most powerful game experiences ever." Nintendo's GameCube delivers new forms of interactive gaming for players. 2004 Nintendo releases the Nintendo DS, a portable system with two screens, one of which can be used as a touch screen. In 2005 Sony releases the PSP, a portable system with a large, high-resolution display Xbox 360 was released in 2005 Nintendo wii was released in 2006 and wii sports became the best selling video game of all time in 2009
