INTRODUCTION :Strengthening of reinforced concrete beams and other structures using advanced fiber reinforced polymer/plastics (FRP) composites has become very popular in last few years.

It is required as a result of increase in service loads, change in usage pattern, structural degradation and defects in design or construction.
Repair with externally bonded FRP is a highly practical strengthening system, because of ease and speed of installation and less labour intensive .

SCOPE OF THIS WORK :To study the behaviour of reinforced concrete beams retrofitted using FRP Composites To generate Finite element models for simulation of the behaviour of beams and to study the various parameters affecting it.

METHODOLOGY :LITERATURE COLLECTION AND REVIEW

STUDY ON MATERIAL PROPERTIES

ANALYSIS OF BEAM USING ANSYS

ANALYSIS OF CONTROL BEAM ANALYSIS OF RETROFITTED BEAM

LITERATURE REVIEW :Carlo Pellegrino and Claudio Modena FIBER-REINFORCED POLYMER SHEAR STRENGTHENING OF REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS: EXPERIMENTAL STUDY AND ANALYTICAL MODELING ACI
STRUCTURAL JOURNAL 2006

The paper is based on an experimental program carried out on beams with different amounts of transverse steel reinforcement and different amounts of CFRP shear strengthening (U-wraps).

FRP deformation is measured and used in the interpretation of the experimental behaviour. Results confirm the presence of an interaction between the internal transverse steel reinforcement and the external FRP strengthening also for U-wraps. A simplified analytical model explaining the failure mechanisms and estimates the interacting contributions of concrete, steel, and FRP on the basis of the experimental behaviour is prescribed in this paper.

Nadeen A. Siddiqui INFLUENCE OF FLEXTURAL STEEL REINFORCEMENT RATIO ON RC BEAMS STRENGTHENED WITH EXTERNALLY BONDED FRP SHEETS Journal of Structural engineering, Vol
37,July 2010

In this paper the use of externally boned Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) sheets for flexural strengthening of RC beams and required to know up to what extent an under reinforced beam can effectively be strengthened using FRP sheets. The test results shows that substantial increase in the flexural strength can be achieved by externally bonding of CFRP sheets to tension side of the under reinforced RC beams and it also have enough ductility to ensure a ductile failure of beams.

Damian Kachlakev, Thomas Miller FINITE ELEMENT MODELING OF REINFORCED CONCRETE STRUCTURES STRENGTHENED WITH FRP LAMINATES for Oregon Department of Transportation Research Group

In this paper Linear and non-linear finite element method models are developed for a reinforced concrete bridge that has been strengthened with fiber reinforced polymer composites. ANSYS and SAP2000 modeling software are used. The model results agreed well with measurements from full-size laboratory beams and the actual bridge. Model results shows that the structural behavior of the bridge before and after strengthening are nearly the same for legal loads.

ELEMENTS TO BE USED:Concrete Grade M40 Reinforcement Steel Solid65 link8

FRP composites

solid45

Solid65
The Solid65 element was used to model the concrete. This element has eight nodes with three degrees of freedom at each node translations in the nodal x, y, and z directions. This element is capable of plastic deformation, cracking in three orthogonal directions, and crushing. A schematic of the element is shown in Figure

Solid45
A Solid45 element was used for FRP. This element has eight nodes with three degrees of freedom at each node translations in the nodal x, y, and z directions. The geometry and node locations for this element is shown in Figure. The descriptions for each element type are laid out in the ANSYS element library

Link8
A Link8 element was used to model steel reinforcement. This element is a 3D spar element and it has two nodes with three degrees of freedom translations in the nodal x, y, and z directions. This element is also capable of plastic deformation. This element is shown in Figure
