The number of reading passages and text types used in each section of the test vary.
SECTION 1 No. of reading passages: 2-3 short passages Text types: Notices, advertisements, leaflets, newspapers, instruction manuals, books and magazines They contain texts relevant to basic linguistic survival in English, with tasks mainly concerned with providing factual information.

SECTION 2 No. of reading passages: 2 Text types: Work-related situations and contexts; job descriptions; staff and professional development opportunities; instruction manuals The texts involve more complex 3/8/13 language.

SECTION 3 No. of reading passages: 1 longer passage Text types: General interest topics based on issues in society, newspaper and magazine articles; texts from the Internet This involves reading more extended texts, with a more complex structure, but with the emphasis on descriptive and instructive 3/8/13 rather than argumentative texts.

There is a variety of question types used in each section and may include any of the following:

Introduction to SKIMMING and SCANNING


You need to be able to SKIM and SCAN well in order to do the IELTS Reading test in one hour. You can SCAN a text to get an idea of the topic or locate a particular section. You do this by noticing the heading, pictures and the general layout. For example, you SCAN a newspaper to find an article you want. Once you have found it, you can3/8/13 the SKIM article to get an idea of what it is about.

There is not enough time in the test to read the texts closely and answer all the questions required. So, it is important to use skills and strategies to help you answer the questions quickly and accurately.

Question Type: MULTIPLE CHOICE


Multiple choice questions test your understanding of main ideas or specific details, usually factual information. Three or four alternative answers are given but only one of these provides true or factual information. The other choices may be partly correct or not refer to any of the information in the passage. There are two types of multiple choice questions:

Question type: True, False, Not Given / Yes, No, Not Given
These questions test your ability to identify and understand factual information or a writers point of view. You need to decide whether a statement is true or false according to the information in the reading passage, or whether there is no information at all relating to the statement in the passage.

Question type: CHOOSING HEADINGS FOR PARAGRAPHS

Some texts have a clear theme in each paragraph. IELTS tests your understanding by asking you to match each paragraph with a heading chosen from a list. The list of headings is given before the passage so that you can read through the headings before you read the passage.

How to approach the task


Read through the list of headings to

familiarise yourself with them.

Take a few minutes to read the passage,

underlining what you think are the main ideas and key words in each paragraph.
Re-read the first paragraph and the sample

heading (if theres any).

Re-read the second paragraph and select

the heading that best fits this paragraph. If you think there is more than one, mark them both and come back to this 3/8/13 paragraph later.

There are always some extra headings that you do not need to use. There is sometimes an example answer.

The skills of SKIMMING and SCANNING will also help you in the Listening test, as you may have to quickly locate information in the question while you listen.
