Is the idea of Pervasive or Ubiquitous Computing really old?

-1988
Machines that fit the human environment instead of forcing humans to enter theirs Is a post-desktop model of human-computer interaction in which information processing has been thoroughly integrated into everyday objects and activities

Mark Weiser, 1952-1999

Father and founder of ubiquitous computing.

Pervasive Computing Network Technologies: WPAN

Wi-Fi - [ IEEE 802.11 ]. Bluetooth - [ IEEE 802.15.1 ]. ZigBee - [ IEEE 802.15.4 ]. Other RF Technologies.

Human Area network

Is Near-body electric-field communication technology with the potential to offer significant advantages to Pervasive computing. (military operations, smart home etc)
6

Its a new technology which uses weak electric fields on the surface of the body as a transmission medium or channel. It gives us safe and high speed network transmission.

MEANING: Tacton: touch-act-on (action triggered by touching) Red: symbol of warmth conveying the cordiality of interpersonal communications Red Tacton works on HAN. (Human area networking)

Communication between electronic wearable devices on human body and outside environment critical-so human area networking essential
Red Tacton uses the surface of the human body as a safe, high speed network transmission path. Red Tacton uses the minute electric field emitted on the surface of the human body for the data transfer. Communication possible through any part of the body.
8

It leverages the conductive properties of the human body to transfer data among electronic devices. Conceived and patented in the mid-1990s by Neil Gershenfeld and Thomas G. Zimmerman at the MIT Media Lab. NTT (Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp.) found this amazing technology in the year 2005.

How it Works?

11

How it Works?
The RedTacton transmitter induces a weak electric field on the surface of the body. Transistor or photonic electric field sensor detects electric field that reaches the RedTacton receiver. Signals are processed in the receiver circuit and the data is downloaded.

Red Tacton works upon the principle that the optical properties of an electro-optic crystal can vary according to the changes of a weak electric field.

Features of RedTacton

15

Touching, gripping, sitting, walking, stepping and other human movements can be the triggers for unlocking or locking, starting or stopping equipment, or obtaining data.

Using RedTacton, communication starts when terminals carried by the user or embedded in devices are linked in various combinations through physical contact according to the humans natural movements.
16

BROADBAND AND INTERACTIVE

Communication speed can downloaded deteriorate in crowded spaces

Device drivers can be

17

instantly and executable

In addition to the human body, various conductors and dielectrics can be used as transmission media. Conductors and dielectrics may also be used in combination.

Conductors: Signals travel along the surfaces of material

Dielectric: Signal pass through materials

Conductor+Dielectr ic: Combination of travelling along and passing through materials

19

Application of HAN
One-to-one services : Marketing Application (Context awareness)
Touch advertising & receive detailed information Inside a shop, shoppers can view related information on their mobile terminals immediately after touching a product.

Intuitive Operations : Private Data Exchange

And since data can pass from one body to another, you could also exchange electronic business cards by shaking hands

20

Touch a printer to print

21

Print out where you want just by touching the desired printer with one hand and a PC or digital camera with the other hand to make the link. Examples of Similar Applications: Transfer songs to portable music players from notebook PCs with just a touch

JUST TOUCHING A PHONE MAKES IT YOUR OWN

JUST SITTING IN THE SEAT TRIGGERS THE CAR TO LOAD ALL ITS PRESETS, JUST THE WAY YOU LIKE

22

POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS

In Security
Carrying a mobile RedTactoncapable device in one's pocket, ID is verified and the door unlocked when the user holds the doorknob normally.
Secure lock administration is possible by combining personal verification tools such as fingerprint ID or other biometric in the mobile terminal.

Comparison with other Network Technologies

Wideband Code Division Multiple Access Personal Digital Cellular

Personal Handy-phone System

Ultra Wideband

RedTacton targets transmission speeds from 100 kbit/s to 10 Mbit/s but in contrast to technologies like wireless local area networks, Bluetooth, and ZigBee, which can propagate signals for over 10 m through space, communication is limited to devices within arms reach (the human area).
28

Unlike wireless, interception is difficult and security can be considered to be high with RedTacton When we compare this with other technologies present today it can give a better performance over others In RedTacton, the start & end of communication are linked to the users actions, giving an intuitive sense of connection to the network Still undergoing development: doesnt work reliably yet

Supports the vision & future of pervasive computing
