0 Male Female

This graph shows that 5 males and 5 females have been given this questionnaire. Both females and males are our target audience so its good to get opinions from both sides. We need to make sure we produce a sequence that will appeal to both genres. As both genders have answered this questionnaire we will be able to get a lot of opinions and information from both sides that will be useful because males and females are our target audience.

The graph conveys that people from all ages have answered this questionnaire giving us an idea of what they want in our product and lots of opinions. The two highest bars, which is 15-16 and 17-18 are our main target audience (teenagers) to ensure the information we get is what they want, therefore making our production what they would like to see because they will be viewing it. The certification will be a 15 and for it to stay in that boundary we need to include violence that does not dwell on detail of the injuries. As there will be moderate violence in our film it cannot be overly gory because then it turns into a 18. An 18 is much less strict on the gore and blood shown. As our film may be viewed by people under 15 we do need to consider that it should be viewable for them also because if young people view our film to it will increase our market, therefore sales. Our plot will not be too scary but may startle younger audiences therefore keeping it at a 15 rather than a 12. We did get a young person to answer however to add their opinion on what they like to see, maximising our information.

On a scale of 1-5 the audience rated what makes them most tense when watching a psychological horror film. We then added them up individually and put them in this graph. As it shows, the majority thought soundtrack makes them most tense. This then means we have to incorporate a very eerie type soundtrack to fulfil the needs of the audience. Our aim is to make the audience to feel tense, so going by what they say would make us achieve just that. By making it a rating question we were able to see what makes people most tense and what doesnt. In this case the least tension is built through Costume and most, Soundtrack. Our audience said that the reason they chose certain ones was because it added to the tension so we need to establish that all these are important because everyone has different opinions in what makes them scared. Lighting was voted second and is a very important technical code because it sets the atmosphere and makes the audience feel tense because something might happen. Lighting and soundtrack will make the audience escape (uses and gratifications theory) their world and enter the movie world because its so engrossing and suspenseful. Dark and suspenseful lighting and soundtrack connotes the genre of horror as well, as opposed to a happy one connoting romance. Even though it didnt achieve many votes Characters play a very key role in connoting the genre. If a a character is dull or boring, the audience will not relate to the character and will not be entertained by them. With this in mind, we need to make the characters very relatable and the Villain within the story has to be somewhat clever and not empty, to appeal to the audience. From this graph it shows that the majority have gone with atomspherical. The audience have said this because it makes it more tense, More frightening, adds tension and draws you into film. These reasons they have stated to why they prefer atomspherical is useful to us because we can use this in our production because the audience want it. Loud has the least votes and is understandable because loud music in a tense film is pointless and its all about suspense. An example of a soundtrack that is atomspherical is the ones they use in Orphan. The track has just the right momentum and pace to create suspension. In the scene when she kills the nun with a hammer the music dramatically changes from atomspherical to quiet so you can only hear the sound effects, thus creating tension for the audience.

Mid tempo, suspensful

High tempo, thrilling

Slow, eerie music

According to the results, both slow, eerie music and mid tempo, suspenseful got the same number of votes. As the audience like both types it shows us that in our production we need to include both types of soundtrack to ensure that the audience would be satisfied. Also changing music tempos adds to tension because it gives a sense of uneasiness from changing soundtrack. Orphan again has a mixture of suspenseful and eerie music within the soundtrack. For example, in the scene when Esther is listening in on the conversation the soundtrack goes from slow to mid tempo when she is shown on screen. This was also accompanied by a loud sound which makes the audience jump. The use of loud sounds and the right soundtrack depending on the mood is vital to make the audience feel tense and entertained when they get spooked. The use of these two soundtracks in our opening sequence will represent the genre as a horror because of the tension being given off, as opposed to a High tempo and thrilling soundtrack, which is more conventional in action movies as it involves action.

Grudge

Orphan

Psycho

Orphan has achieved the most votes and this shows us that we need to do research on the soundtrack of that film because the audience seem to like it the best. We can learn from this and involve the type of soundtrack in our work because its what the audience prefers and thats who we are selling to. Orphans soundtrack is very suspenseful and eerie and this shows the audience like to be tense when watching a horror. The soundtrack gives off a very creepy and delusional atmosphere most of the time because of the atmospherical soundtrack. Orphans soundtrack as a whole gives off an enigma code because the audience are constantly being kept in suspense, and are then frightened at certain parts because of a non-diegetic sound (such as a violin screech), that makes them jump because it was once silent. This also entertains the audience, as part of the u and g theory, because the audience are constantly kept guessing and aware at all times.

3 2 1 0 Spirits Mind Realism Death Mystery

The theme that has been most popular is mind, therefore in our production we need to incorporate that into our storyline because the public likes that the best. Phrases such as Its freaky, Its interesting and Makes you think have been used in the Why? Part. This gives us reason and evidence of why the audience like that theme. The second voting majority was realistic and can also be involved in our storyline because a lot of people liked that too. The audience like the theme of mind because it is relatable and an interesting topic. These themes are stereotypical plot themes for psychological horror genre. Many films have these themes and we will have to learn how to incorporate these into our work to convey the genre, especially Mind. If the film was realistic, as the audience prefers it to be, enables the audience to relate to certain characters, and even be tense because the narrative is realistic, thus making them feel as if these sceneries can happen because it is made to be realistic. Psychological horrors conventionally require death to be in it. But it is vital to note that the deaths should not be gory and dwell on the detail, which will make it part of the slasher sun genre. Psychological horrors dont have many deaths in them, but have a few in order for the audience to be informed that something is not right with one of the characters, whether mentally or physically, is a mystery. The theme mystery received the second least amount of votes, informing us that the audience prefers the other themes. However, there is a niche audience who loves the theme, therefore making our narrative include mystery, will appeal to them. Mystery in narratives appeal to the audience because they are coming up with questions which they want answered and are constantly looking for clues to find the answers for themselves. But a narrative which involves too much mystery, can annoy and frustrate some audiences because they feel as if the narrative is going no where. So it is vital to note that some mystery will be efficient to wider appeal our film, but making it dominate the storyline will not appeal to our target audience. As the theme spirit did not achieve any votes, it informs us that our target audience does not enjoy the sub genre supernatural horror, but prefers psychological because the themes that you would stereotypically associate with that genre was voted for the most.

0 Simple Complicated Strong impact

The audience seem to like the plot to have a strong impact over complicated and simple, therefore our storyline should have a strong impact on the audience. Future questionnaires may ask to audience if they like our plot idea. If the storyline has a strong impact it shows the audience would like a film that brings up a lot of questions after the films has finished so they keep talking about it with friends, giving different ideas (Interaction for uses and gratifications theory). Complicated storylines are hard to follow therefore loses audiences interest in film so we have to make the story compelling and entertaining. Enigma codes can create a strong impact on the audience because they are constantly asking questions about the narrative that they want answered and think about it after the film finishes.

8 6 4 2 0 A 12A A 15 A 18

The audience have voted mostly for a 15 certification. This can be achieved by looking at the bbfc guidelines for a 15 and making our film fit the description of what it can and cant have. A 15 is what our target audience is and most people have voted for it because they wouldnt want a film to be too mature. A 12 was voted least meaning we cant make our film too childish as they want a film that is on a mature level. As explained in another graph our film cannot dwell on detail of injuries and cannot be too gory thus making it a suitable age rating of 15. The fact that an 18 is voted second, shows that our audience does not want to see a very gory film because the content in an 18 is very extreme, thus appealing to their needs we need to keep it at a 15.

5 4 3 2 1 0 The Grudge Orphan Cabin in the woods Saw

The film that got the most votes was the grudge and Orphan, this means that we should do research on both of these films as our audience likes them. Cabin in the woods got the least amount and we have to find out what went wrong with that film and try to avoid those mistakes when producing our own film. The narrative will be researched and need to observe the plot to see why the audience doesnt find it that compelling. Research will need to be conducted on the films Orphan and The grudge in order to gather research on the technical codes used, genre conventions and the narrative. Gathering research on these films will be most helpful when planning our production because we will be able to see why the audience is appealed by the film. The grudge and Orphan especially, are very conventional psychological horror films and the fact that they got the most votes, shows that the audience would like a stereotypical psychological horror film because they would know what to expect. With this in mind, we have to make our film be very conventional to appeal to the audience.

0 Own F/F

The graph shows that our audience like to watch films with their friends and family. This means that our film should be able to open up discussions so they can talk about it. Our film also has to be engaging because a lot of people watch it at the same time. The phrases our audience gave to why they prefer watching it with family and friends were as follows: Its more fun and enjoyable. Also people when they watch it with others they get a sense of security because there are others in the room, so they are less likely to cover their eyes in fright. The audience can be more entertained (uses and gratifications theory) because when watching it with others you can experience the terror together and just enjoy it more. The reasons people like to watch it independently was because they find it more thrilling and scary.

The famous horror director, Alfred Hitchcock has got the most votes. As the audience likes his techniques the best we need to research his movies and the techniques he uses. He is famous for creating tension in his movies so it reinforces the audience like to be scared. Wes craven got the least amount of votes so we still need to research on him to understand what techniques he uses and make them better. Hitchcock uses camera shots to create tension placing specific objects and people in specific placing to add to the suspense for the audience. He is also known for slow movement tracking shots to further make the audience tense because it keeps them in suspense from the slow movement.

5 4 3 2 1 0 Black Dark Blue Dark Purple Red

The colour that was voted the most was black followed by red. Black usually connotes mystery and darkness which fits in with our plot, making the title sequence able to connote the genre of horror. Later questionnaires may be done on the type of fonts the audience like for titles, as well as the name of the film. We will ensure that our title sequence is black. Orphans title sequence is a very good example of what type of a title sequence we may do. It is very simple and yet has a very strong impact because of the colour black and the non-diegetic noises in the background creating unease. Red, is also a viable option because it got the second most votes. The colour red usually connotes blood and danger, which appeals to the audience because the colour will represent the genre of the film and if used in the right context, may understand the basis of the narrative. Dark purple is not a conventional colour to use in the title sequences for psychological horrors and neither is dark blue. As the colours do not represent the genre which is key or appeal to the audience, we will not include the colours in our title sequence.

0 Bold Simple Fancy Complicated

The audience has voted that bold typography would be best for the title. This may be because it is easily recognised from far away and is easy to read. It also has a strong impact because its in bold making it seem strong. Fancy typography got no votes, which is understandable because that typography does not connote the genre horror but maybe a romance. Typefaces that can be used are: ARIAL, ARIAL BLACK, COPPERPLATE GOTHIC BOLD. These are very simple fonts but very effective as they seem too normal and can be twisted in a way to make it more scary maybe. The bold fonts also suggest a very strong impact narrative rather than fancy font, which may imply a complicated plot full of plot holes and gaps to be filled.

Ghostface

Esther

Jigsaw

The villain that got the most votes was Esther from Orphan. This means that when making our Villain in our film we need to make her like Esther as she appeals to the public most. Research will need to be done on how Esther is represented in her film and how we can incorporate some of her mischievous characteristics to our character. Ghostface got the least amount of votes, maybe because he has no substance and no emotions whereas Esther does. Making our Villain in a way likable would interest the audience more and want to see what will happen to the Villain in the end. Our villain has to have a very good costume in order to come across as evil and a bit of innocence as well. Her facial expressions and gestures have to be just right in order to represent her characteristics.

0 Long shot Mid shot Close-ups Over the Extreme shoulder Close-up

This graph shows us that the camera shots the audience want to see in the opening sequence is Close-ups. But the other shots were close to the top so this means that all these shots should be used in our opening sequence. Over the shoulder was voted least and may not be used in the sequence because it is least popular with the audience. The majority of the close up vote shows that the audience would like to see facial expressions on characters and feel their emotions. The audience from the camera shots being used are informed (uses and gratifications theory) of what the characters are like and whether or not if they establish a relationship with them. The audience also establishes if they feel sympathy for a certain character, which is identification of the uses and gratifications theory. The most votes for close ups also suggests that the target audience would like to see very good acting because they want to see the faces of the actors and their facial expressions, which means we need to make sure that our characters emotions are coming through and what they are feeling is being conveyed to the audience. The extreme close ups are conventional in psychological horrors because it makes the audience in suspense and at unease because of the uncomfortable angle and that you cant see what's going on around the point of focus. As the results showed a varied opinion on shot types, this shows that we need to include a wide range of shots to appeal to the audience because they get information form the shots. For example, one could see why one would want to see long shots because it enables the audience to see how the characters are reacting with their environment, as well as understand their character because you can see what their costume is. This enables the audience to identify ( uses and gratifications theory) how the characters act and what their personalities are like, therefore understanding if they like the character.
