Visual Rhetoric Analysis

Aaron Nail English 1102-103 Professor Brown

Introduction

Power has many definitions, but power to me is the ability to move something. Whether that be with strength or mental or emotional. It can affect you in any way. While doing this project I did not have a set theme. After looking at my pictures and eliminating some of them and adding new ones I noticed there was. I saw that all of the images had to deal with problems or issues in the world. This project has taught me a lot about power and how you can define it. Power can be a great thing, but then again the worst thing. Power can corrupt the best, but also strengthen the weak. It all depends how you use your power and how you help others in your community.

Introduction

While looking through some a lot of these pictures and selecting the ones I thought were fit, I noticed a lot of powerful pictures, some more than others. These pictures that you will see had a powerful impact to me, and my opinion.

Why did I select this image: I selected this image because I think it is a huge leap, as Usain is the greatest athlete of all time. He is celebrating a new record that he broke of fastest time, the previous record holder was himself What does this image state about power: Usain is the best athlete in the world and athletes have a lot of power in this world. Why do I state so: Athletes are treated like gods in today's culture

Paradigm 1

Piece- This is Usain Bolt beating his own record and winning gold for the Jamaica in the Olympics. It was originally published in ESPN and Sports Illustrated. It was taken during the 2012 Summer Olympics after he won. The main point is show that he is the greatest athlete of all time, he also beat his own world record. Agent- Ronald Martinez took the picture, he is a professional photographer. Receiver- The primary audience is anyone who was keeping up with the Olympics or any sport fans. I am a part of this audience, I am an avid sports viewer and kept up with all of the Olympics. Agenda- I do not believe that bias is presented in the piece

Demands- I do not think the piece urges anything either, I think it is just an expressive image that shows history being made. Inquiries- Some things I want to know beyond this piece is plans on competing in the next Olympics. I do not believe they are trying to sway me with anything. Gains-Some things I gained from this piece is that Usain runs 4 different events in track. They shared that Usain is not only the fastest person by defeating his old world record but he is the best athlete. Motivators- I think that having him be the fastest man in the world and just setting a new world record. I love sports and anything to do with them, that is why I picked this picture

Piece- This picture is of Felix Bumgartner free falling from the Red Bull shuttle 5 miles in the air. It was originally published by Red Bull. It was published on October 14,2012. This is a new world record and I think that is the main point of it. Agent- Red Bull created this photo and he was jumping out of the shuttle. The agency can be contacted though various sporting events. Receiver- The primary audience is anyone interested in space, science, sports, or anything in involved with this stunt. I am a part of this audience as I enjoy space and sports, not too much science though. I perceive this image as a very powerful image as Felix is putting the human body to immeasurable tests and tasks.

Agenda- This image is not biased in any way. It is just an expressive image. Demands- This piece urges that anything is possible. This can show you that if you put your mind to it you can achieve anything. Inquiries- The only question I have is what made him think of pulling a stunt like this. I do not think Red Bull is attempting to sway me with this picture. Gains- Something I gained from this piece is that it is possible to free fall from 5 miles and for a human to break the sound barrier. It has motivated me to try things I do not think I can do.

Motivators- I am not really sure what motivated Felix to do this jump, but I found it through sports and that is my reason for picking it.
