Born in Kensington , London in 1882 Father : Sir Leslie Stephen-an historian and author and one of the most

prominent figures in the golden age of mountaineering Mother : Julia Prinsep Stephen-born in India and served as a model Siblings : three full siblings and four half-siblings

Her most vivid childhood memories were of St. Ives in Cornwall, where the

family spent every summer until 1895 Memories of her family holidays are described in To the Lighthouse Her mothers death in 1895 led to Virginias first nervous breakdowns She studied Greek , Latin and German in Kings College London Her fathers death in 1904 resulted in her most alarming collapse It is suggested that her breakdowns are also because of sexual abuse 1941-commited a suicide

Life in Bloomsbury
After her fathers death Virginia moved to Bloomsbury She joined the Bloomsbury Group-a circle of talented writers

1912-despite her low material status she married Leonard Woolf


1917-Virginia and her husband founded the Hogarth Press which published

Virginias novels along with those of T.S,Elliot and others 1922-met the writer Vita Sackville-West and began a sexual relationship with her

In 1998 Michael Cunningham's novel The Hours which was focused on three generations of women affected by Woolf s writing was awarded a Pulitzer Prize. In 2002 a film version of the novel starring Nicole Kidman and Julianne Moore was released and Nicole Kidman won Academy Award for Best Actress.
