Jesus and Peter

Todays Topic
The reason I have focused on the Apostle Peter in this Bible study is because it illustrates how great Jesuss love is.

Jesus, the son of God, who

was crucified for our sin loved Peter so much that

he could forgave him even though Peter denied Him

Jesus Calls His First Disciples

Matthew 4:18-19 (pp.683)
18 As

Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, 19 for they were fishermen. Come, follow me, Jesus said, and I will send you out to fish for people.

And of the 12, Peter became the groups informal leader.

Peters small town naivet and unabashed machismo teamed up to make him a take charge kind of guy, and Jesus seemed to take a special delight in him.

Jesus Walks on the Water

Matthew 14:22-33

(pp.692)

Matthew 14:22-33 (pp.692) Jesus Walks on the Water 22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. 25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. Its a ghost, they said, and cried out in fear. 27 But Jesus immediately said to them: Take courage! It is I. Dont be afraid. 28 Lord, if its you, Peter replied, tell me to come to you on the water. 29 Come, he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, Lord, save me! 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. You of little faith, he said, why did you doubt? 32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, Truly you are the Son of God.

It was his courage that most distinguished him.

When Jesus approached the disciples boat, walking on the water, it was Peter who got out of the boat and walked across the water toward him.

It was Peter who made the first public declaration of the Lords true identity as Messiah of Israel.
When they were surrounded by a large contingent of armed temple guards on the night of the Lords arrest, it was Peter who drew a sword and cut off Malchus ear. He was ready to take on the whole bunch.

Peter Disowns Jesus

Luke 22: 54-62 (pp. 747)

Luke 22: 54-62 (pp. 747) Peter Disowns Jesus 54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. 55 And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, This man was with him. 57 But he denied it. Woman, I dont know him, he said. 58 A little later someone else saw him and said, You also are one of them. Man, I am not! Peter replied. 59 About an hour later another asserted, Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean. 60 Peter replied, Man, I dont know what youre talking about! Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times. 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.

it was such a shock to everyone when a powerless servant girl scared Peter into denying the Lord three times later that night. It was so out of character for him.

The Apostle Peter is a fascinating character. He was the only one willing to step out of the boat to walk towards Jesus on the water.

I have grown fond of Peter because what he did demonstrates our frailties as human beings. But we sometimes continue to commit the same sins or make the same mistakes every day.

Jesus Reinstates Peter

John 21: 15-19 (pp. 769)

John 21: 15-19 (pp. 769) Jesus Reinstates Peter 15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon son of John, do you love me more than these? Yes, Lord, he said, you know that I love you. Jesus said, Feed my lambs. 16 Again Jesus said, Simon son of John, do you love me? He answered, Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. Jesus said, Take care of my sheep. 17 The third time he said to him, Simon son of John, do you love me? Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, Do you love me? He said, Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you. Jesus said, Feed my sheep. 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go. 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, Follow me!

Even though Peter denied Him in a very critical moment in the Saviors life, Jesus loved Peter so much that he could forgave him.

For example, after his resurrection, Jesus showed his unconditional love towards peter when he prepared them a meal and fellowshipped with his disciples.

it shows how great Jesuss love is.

We must depend on Jesus to enable and strengthen us to meet the challenges of every day life.

Because of Jesuss sacrifice, God is able to forgive us when we repent of our sins and call on the name of Jesus.
