Simple Present vs. Present Continuous

Whats the difference?

When do we use each tense?

The outcomes: Students should be able to:


avoid confusing tense with time, and the structure of simple present and present continuous. Increase the strength, flexibility, and variety of English language. Diagram several sentences correctly and know the basic elements in a sentence.

Present SimpleTense
We use simple present tense to talk about things in general. Ex: Nurses look after the patients in hospitals.
Children like ice-cream

We use it to say that something happens repeatedly or for habitual actions or daily activities I usually go to the market at weekends.
Paul wakes up at 5 in the morning.

We use it to say that something is true or factual in general.

THE PRESENT SIMPLE TENSE (Negative)

Complete the sentences using one of the following verbs

Make negative and Interrogative sentences using the correct form of verb

Present Continuous Tense


Present Continuous is used to express the idea that something is happening now or at this moment. It is used to say something is in the process of doing a longer action.

What is happening in the picture? Use present continuous tense!

He is running.

He is playing now.

They are eating and laughing at the moment.

Present Continuous (Interrogative)


Am I reading a story at the moment? Yes, I am. Is the baby crying now? No, he isnt. He is sleeping. Are you working on any projects? Yes, we are working on a project now.

Present Continuous (Negative)


For this tense, simply ADD the word NOT after verb BE. They are working today. They are NOT working today.

Sarah is taking a Math class. Sarah is NOT taking a Math class.

Complete these sentences with either the present simple or the present continuous
