ARDUINO UNO R3 CASE

DEFINITION OF THE PROJECT

As product designers, we were asked to design a new plastic product that were easy and inexpensive to manufacture.
After some research, the team decided to create a case for an Arduino Uno R3 board.

Product

The idea is to build a shield to save the Arduino without the fear of damaging the circuit by contact with other objects, and that is enough for placement excisable other additional parts for prototyping.

FEATURES

Provide an attractive solution to protect your Arduino Uno. Provide openings to all connectors. Keeps your Arduino safe and clean. Light weight.

Made of ABS plastic (good thermo stability, high intensity).

Research

There are a lot of Arduino cases on the market. The price range is between 10-40 dollars. Some cases are designed for 3d printing, which can be useful if you own one. Most designs have access to run wires out of the case to any component you want to be kept externally. Fewer cases have enough placements to hold additional parts as batteries, breadboards or components for prototyping.

Concept designs

DESIGNS

Next , we will see each one of the members design on the Arduino case, following the features proposed.

After reviewing each concept, we will decide which design is the best.

ULYSSES DESIGN

Ulysses design consists of two different parts that perfectly match. Following the specifications, this design keeps the Arduino safe and its good looking at the same time. However, this concept its heavy and pretty hard to mold.

ALBERTS DESIGN

Alberts design consists of four different parts that perfectly match. This design allows the Arduino to connect any cable or hack. Keeping it simple and fresh. However, this concept is fragile.

COMPARISON
DESIGN Ulysses LIGHT WEIGHT 52 grams. A quite heavy design. NUMBER OF PIECES Two pieces. They perfectly match and are easy to connect. GOOD LOOKING Smooth and elegant. Beautiful and comfortable design. IMPACT RESISTANT Does the job. Keeps the Arduino safe. DESIGN Complex. Requires precise tooling.

Albert

30.93 grams. A light design.

4 types of Simple and pieces, forming Elegant a total of 9 Design. pieces

It can be fragile.

Simple and easy setup.

CONCLUSION

After evaluating all the suggestions, the team members decided that Ulysses' case was the winner. It meets almost every feature and can be easily improved in the future. However, Alberts design was really good and some concepts used in his model will be applied to Ulysses design.

MANUFACTURING

MOLDING

Our design consists of two different pieces that are joined. The base is basically a plastic plate with four 0.25 diameter holes. On the other hand , the top is a protective case of 5/16 wall thickness and four 0.25 holes. In order to ease the molding process, we decided to use standard end mills. The whole mold can be done by using 1/8 and 5/16 end mills.

How it works?

Each mold consists in three or two different pieces. Both molds required all threads and nuts to join the different pieces.

All threads

As shown below, the resin is pour on the top face, filling the hollow area of the mold.

Hollow area Resin

Finally, the resin will solidify and we could took off the piece of the product by just releasing the screws from the mold pieces.

TOP MOLD
This mold consists in two different pieces. They are joined by four pins in each corner of the mold. Each pin is 0.25 in diameter and 5.5 length. The top of the mold is uncover, allowing to pour the material really easy. Also the whole mold can be done by using 5/16 and 1/8 end mills. To remove the part, its necessary to pull down one piece of the mold and take out very carefully the part .

This design is more complex and to take out the part its necessary to remove both lateral pieces and finally the center piece.

THE END

The Arduino board is a popular open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-touse hardware and software. It's intended for artists, designers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments. The design of the case was inspired on the needs and benefits of a functional case. Every prototype was intentioned to be durable, easy to use and a good protection for the Arduino board. The final result resistant yet easy to use.
