Hot water solutions

India - Current scenario

Majority of a building energy needs are required for airconditioning, lighting, water heating and other electrical appliances Considerable efforts are on for energy saving in airconditioning ,lighting and other electrical appliances. Hot water is one area were significant energy is consumed and has strong need for saving energy and its cost.

Hot water current scenario

Largely all residential and commercial buildings are using Electric resistance (geyser) water heater, with some having oil/gas fired boilers. Electric geysers at its best efficiency gives 0.9KW of heat energy for every 1 KW of Electricity consumed. Oil/Gas fired Hot water systems are also expensive and energy intensive

The Challenge
Heating water for everyday use is typically the second largest use of energy after airconditioning. Nationwide millions of Electric water heaters are sold in a typical year, including electric, diesel and gas .Given the need to reduce our Electricity use and reduce CO2 emissions, the challenge is to find a better source for Hot Water.

Energy
Bridge the Electricity demand supply gap
Efforts are required not only on the supply side but also on the demand side There is a need to use energy more efficiently and achieve higher level of energy and cost savings Heat pump water heating technology is one of the means of achieving this.

What is Heat Pump

The technology inside an air source heat pump water heater works on similar principles to the way a domestic fridge works A device which extracts energy from air and uses it to heat water is called air to water Heap pump

How it works
Water heater that heats its waternot by gas, Diesel nor by electricitybut simply by the air surrounding it. Your Electricity bills would be significantly lower, and you would be doing the environment a service by conserving a considerable amount of energy. If it takes 4 units of energy to heat water, Heat Pump utilizes 1 unit from an electric outlet, and 3 units from the surrounding air, reducing your energy consumption by about 3 times that of your current water heater.

Heat Pump Advantages

Heat Pump is that it is capable of delivering energy up to 4 times of the energy it consumes Heat Pump is more efficient and cost less compared to other hot water generator It is gradually substituting traditional heating facilities of fuel, gas and electric boiler and solar heating water equipment Another advantage of using Heat Pump is that it can reduce CO2 emissions which are considered as the major cause of global warming.

Heat pump water Heater Principle

This principle can be hard to grasp, since it is not an immediately obvious process. The diagram below may help to understand.

You Gain

Extracted heat (2.5kW) + Power input (1kW) = The useful heat output (3.5kW)

Geyser Principle

You Lose

Available output (0.9 KW) = Electrical input (1KW )- Losses (0.1KW)

Heat Pump Water Heater

Efficiency
The efficiency of heat pump Water heater is measured as Coefficient of Performance (CoP). It is the amount of energy the heat pump produces compared to the amount of electricity needed to run the pump. For example, a heat pump which uses 1kW of electricity to produce 4kW of usable energy has a CoP of 4 and is therefore upto 400% efficient.

Pay Back
There is significant increase in the cost of electrical power and diesel . This will further reduce life cycle cost of Klima heat pump water heating compared to traditional water heating systems. Pay back can be less than 2 years .

Klima vs Diesel Boiler

KLIMA Water Heating v/s Diesel Boiler,
Features

KLIMA Water Heating

5000 litres
12kw x 3 machines =36 kw 36kw X 5 hrs running = 180 kW

Diesel Boiler

50000 kcal or 58 kW boiler for 3 hrs 175 KW

180 KW heating is delivered using power input 4.5kW x 3 machines x 5 hrs = 61kWH 175 kw is delivered using 25 litres per day

Approx. cost of fuel used per day Approx. cost of fuel used per annum Indicative system price Effective cost after 1st year

365 days X Rs. 1075.00=Rs. 3,92,375.00 Rs. 4,00,000,00 Rs. (4,00,000,00 + 3,92,375)= Rs. 7,92,375.00

Effective cost after 2st year

Rs. 10,15,650.00

Rs. (7,92,375.00 +3,92,375)= Rs. 11,84,750.00

Total annual Savings after 2nd year Rs 3,92,375 Rs 1,47,825 if KLIMA water heater is installed Rs. 2,44,550.00 against Diesel Boiler
