Introduction
What is Smart Materials Concept ?
The use of "smart materials" for corrosion sensing relies on a material undergoing a transformation through its interaction with the corrosive environment. Such transformations can potentially be used for corrosion. Ideally, such function could be integrated with additional actuation and control corrosion functions, designed to control corrosion damage. The best coatings for corrosion protection provide not only barriers to the environment, but also a controlled release of a corrosion inhibitor, as demanded by coating damage and the presence of a corrosive environment. What is Corrosion ?
The electrochemical corrosion is the deterioration of materials by chemical interaction with their environment. The term corrosion is sometimes also applied to the degradation of plastics, concrete and wood, but generally refers to metals. The most widely used metal is iron (usually as steel) and the following discussion is mainly related to its corrosion. E.g. 1) Rusting conversion of iron in to its oxide (Fe2O3 Heamatite) 2) Tarnishing silver is converted in its sulfide (Ag2S Silver glance)
Methods for
Microencapsulation is a process by which very tiny droplets or particles of liquid or solid materials are surrounded or coated with a continuous film of polymeric materials. Microcapsules consist of two components namely core material and coat or shell material. Core material contains active ingredient (corrosion inhibitor) while coat or shell material(polymeric materials) covers or protects the core material. a) High surface areas (e.g. good carriers) b) Novel surface chemistries (triggered release) c) Multiple property enhancements (e.g. corrosion resistance and chemical resistance)
