Magna Carta 1215

The major source of traditional English respect for individual rights and liberties. Contract between the king and nobles of England. Limited the power of the English monarch over all his English subjects.

English Bill of Rights 1689

Formal summary of the rights and liberties believed essential to the people. Limited the monarchys power and protected free speech in Parliament. Increased the power of the Parliament, which is then spread to the people

Declaration of Independence 1776

Declared to King George III of England and to the world why they should be free of British rule. Governments are created by the people to protect their rights. Ideas of the Enlightenment especially Lockes ideas influenced the writers.

Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen 1789

Influenced by enlightenment and the U.S. Declaration of Independence. Drafted by National Assembly and limited French monarchy. Guaranteed rights of liberty, property, security, and resistance to oppression.

U.S. Bill of Rights 1791

Contains amendments which limited the power of the U.S. federal government. These limitations serve to protect the natural rights of liberty and property. It is a vital symbol of freedom and culture of our nation.

Freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and to petition the government. Individuals have a right to own a weapon. Individuals cannot be forced to have troops in times of peace or war. Individuals cannot be searched or seized in their home. An Individual is innocent until proven guilty, cannot be tried for the same crime twice, have the right to remain silent, and cannot be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law or shall private property be taken for public use without consent of the owner. Individuals have the right to a fair, quick, and public trial, right to an attorney and the right to be confronted with the witnesses against them. An individual cannot be sued for over $20 if a jury is not present. An individual cannot be given excessive bail or cruel and unusual punishment. People have more rights than those in the constitution. The individual has power. The states have power.
