MIS PROJECT REPORT ON EYE SCANNER

IRIS SCANNING

IRIS SCANNING
Iris scanning can seem very futuristic, but at the heart of the system is a simple CCD digital camera. It uses both visible and near-infrared light to take a clear, high-contrast picture of a person's iris. With near-infrared light, a person's pupil is very black, making it easy for the computer to isolate the pupil and iris. When you look into an iris scanner, either the camera focuses automatically or you use a mirror or audible feedback from the system to make sure that you are positioned correctly.

IRIS SCANNING
Usually, your eye is 3 to 10 inches from the camera. When the camera takes a picture, the computer locates:

The center of the pupil

The edge of the pupil The edge of the iris The eyelids and eyelashes

IDENTIFY PEOPLE BY THEIR IRISES

MANUFACTURERS OF EYE SCANNERS

That identify people by their irises tout the technology as the 21st-century equivalent of fingerprint

analysis. But scanners have been limited by their 6-inch range, as well as their sensitivity to movement and obstructions (such as stray lashes). Now Honeywell has built a Combined Face and Iris Recognition System (CFAIRS), which extends the range of iris scans to 16 feet.

The technology that scans the retina is known as retinal scanning. The true target for the scan is the

capillary pattern in the retina. The process relies on generating images of the retina using a low-intensity light source. In the 1930s retinal capillary patterns were suggested to be unique, but the technology used to exploit this information was developed much later. Although military and high-security use of photographic retinal scans began decades earlier, by 1985, retinal scan technology became available for computerized biometric identification and commercial security use.

ADVANTAGES

Very high accuracy. Verification time is generally less than 5 seconds.

The eye from a dead person would deteriorate too fast to be useful, so no extra precautions have to been taken with retinal scans to be sure the user is a living human being.

DISADVANTAGES

Intrusive. A lot of memory for the data to be stored.

Very expensive

PROCEDURES

PROCEDURES
Retina scanning procedures. Retinal scans are based on the presence of the fine network of capillaries supplying the retina with oxygen and nutrients. These vessels absorb light and can be easily visualized with proper illumination. Retinal scans require close contact of user and scanner, a perfect alignment of the eye with a scanner, and no movement of the eye. The examiner is required to keep the subject's eye within half an inch of the instrument. The

subject must focus on a pinpoint of little green light (to properly align the eye) and avoid
blinking. A low-intensity coherent light is then transmitted through the eye and the reflected image of the retinal capillary pattern is recorded by the computer.

HOW DOES A DIGITAL RETINAL SCAN WORK?

A Digital Retinal Scan uses optical technology to provide a 30 to 45 degree Photograph of your retina ,optic and nerve and blood center. This attention to detail is important as some eye conditions and other medical issue can be detected by comparing small changes over time. Our optometrist will ask you to look through an eyepiece attached to the scanner which is looking through a pair of binoculars You will be asked to look at a colored spot, before a flash goes off.

WHAT WE CHECK FOR

In most cases, all we find are good, healthy retinas. But a Digital Retinal Scan can assist us in providing an early warning of issues and abnormalities that may indicate poor eye health or the early stages of eye diseases.

RETINAL SCANNING ADVANTAGES

Very high accuracy. There is no known way to replicate a retina.

DISADVANTAGES

Very intrusive. It has the stigma of consumer's thinking it is potentially harmful to the eye. Comparisons of template records can take upwards of 10 seconds, depending on the size of the database. Very expensive.
