Physical layer standards for ATM

DS1 Atm physical interface-193 bits long -first bit for frame alignment , performance monitoring etc. -Rest 192 bits for payload. -cell transmission rate is 1.536 mbps.-24 bytes/125microsec=1.536 mbps -payload divided into 24 voice channels of 1 byte each-8 bits. -Supports PDH hierarchy.

DS1 ATM Physical layer interface

DS3 ATM physical layer interface

We use 672 voice channel form a DS3 channel Cell rate transfer is 44.737 Mbps. Contains 7 m-sub frames of 680 bits each and each 680 is divided Into 8 blocks of 85 bits.1 for header and 84 for payload. Overhead fields is provided below: X-bits-X1,X2 bits indicate received error multiframes to remote end-indicates error conditions like loss of signal.

DS3
P-bits-P1,P2 carry parity information M-bits:M1,M2,M3 bits are used to locate the sub frame within a multiframe. F-bits: used to locate the overhead bits within a sub frame. C-bits: used for specific purposes

DS3

DS3
Cells are mapped in PLCP , then it is carried in DS3 frame. Provides means to transfer 12 ATM cells evry 125 mc and data rate is 40.704Mbps. A frame contains 12 rows of 57 bytes each. 4 overhead bytes followed by a 53 bytes cell. The fields used in PLCP frame are: A- bytes-used for frame alignment.-framing bytes

DS3
B1 bit interleaved parity byte-contains bit interleaved parity-used for path error monitoring. G1 PLCP-carries error monitoring information in opposite site direction of transmission. C1 cycle-determines if the PLCP ends with 13 or 14 nibbles-nibble stuff is used to align the PLCP frame to DS3 frame. Z1-Z6:-reserved for future use.

E1 ATM Physical Layer interface

30 voice channels provide cell rate of 1.92 Mbps. It also has two control channels used for framing and other purposes. Number of bytes is 30 and cell bytes is 53 so one cell spans over multiple E1 frames. Slot 0 is used for framing OAM functions and slot 16 is reserved for signalling.

E1 ATM physical layer interface

E3 ATM physical layer interface

Operates at 34.268Mbps. E3 frame contains 7 bytes for overhead and 530 bytes of payload capacity(58+59*8). FAx-is used for frame alignment. Error monitoring byte:-used for error monitoringcontains bit interleaved parity. Trail Trace byte-used to repetitively transmit a trail access point identifier. Maintenance and Adaptation byte:-carry error information in opposite direction of transmission

Network Operator byte:-maintenance purposes specific to individual network operators. General purpose communication channel-to provide interface for general purposes.
