Socrates 469 399 B.C. Plato 427 347 B.C. Aristotle 384 322 B.C. Mahatma Gandhi 1869 - 1948

Socrates (469 399 BC)


Lived in Athens during the 5th century. Was a soldier during the Peloponnesian War and later worked as a sculptor. Refused to accept any payment for his services. Attracted many young men who flocked in great numbers to pursue knowledge from him. Was sentenced to death in 399 B.C., drank hemlock and later died, surrounded by his friends and followers.

Plato (427 347 B.C.)


Was a philosopher who was a student of Socrates and teacher to Aristotle. One of his early works, Dialogue contained information about Socrates. His later work, Republic was a combination of several disciplines. Replaced Socrates as the Great Teacher. In 385 B.C., he established his own school known as the Academy which later became the most popular school in the world. Plato taught in this school until his death in 347 C. B.

Teachings of Plato - Dialogues


Early stage : - Uses the questioning method known as the Socratic method. - During a question-and-answer session, the expert (teacher) sits in one place and the students sit opposite him. Middle stage : - Still using the Socratic method, but focusing on Platos own ideas and concerned with issues related to knowledge, form, soul, and political theory. Final stage : - Emphasis is given more to metaphysics and the logical assumptions of Platos ideas as introduced in the middle stage.

Platos Work The Republic


He recommended the kind of education system and curriculum that he deemed suitable. The ideal society is said to consist of 3 stages of people : Guardians. The educated strata responsible for the administration of the affairs of the nation. Traders Craftsmen. The second and third stages are less educated or even uneducated and work as apprentices.

Aristotle (384 322 B.C.)


Was a Greek philosopher who was a student of and teacher to Alexander The Great. When he was 17 years old, he was sent by his guardian, Proxenus to complete his education at the Academy. He is the most suitable person to head the Academy when Plato died but then the position was given to Platos favourite student, Speusippus. Following this incident, Aristotle resigned and set up his own school in Lyceum. Was definitely very committed and diligent in his teaching.

Mahatma Gandhi (1869 1948)


Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi Was born in Porbanar, Gujarat, India in 1869. Graduated with a law degree from University College, London. Left to work in an Indian firm which had opened a branch office in Durban, South Africa after fail to set up his own law firm in Bombay.

They will equip themselves with the required knowledge and skills in their respective subject areas. They will ensure that they become role models to the pupils. They will strive to do their level best in tasks and responsibilities. They will also enhance their professionalism.
