They are auxiliary verbs, which means they work with another verb. Modal verbs go with another verb in the infinitive (the form of the verb that ends en).

Drfen
Drfen means to be allowed. ich darf du darfst er / sie / es darf wir drfen ihr drft Ich darf kein Bier trinken. sie drfen Im not allowed to drink beer. Sie drfen Wir drfen morgen ins Kino gehen. Were allowed to go to the cinema tomorrow. Sie darf nicht ins Kino gehen. Shes not allowed to go to the cinema.
This could also be translated as she cant go to the cinema or she mustnt go to the cinema, so be careful!

Mssen
Mssen means must / to have to. ich muss du musst er / sie / es muss wir mssen Ich muss jetzt zur Schule fahren. ihr msst I have to go to school now. sie mssen Sie mssen Er muss seine Hausaufgaben machen. He has to do his homework.

Mgen
Mgen means to like. Ich mag Fuball spielen. ich mag Magst du Sport? du magst er / sie / es mag wir mgen ihr mgt sie mgen Sie mgen You often come across mgen is in its subjunctive form, e.g. ich mchte I would like.

Ich mchte
Ich mchte is a common German phrase that means I would like. It is the imperfect subjunctive form of the verb mgen.

Sollen
Sollen in the present tense means to be supposed to or shall. Although these are in the imperfect (past) tense, they can be used with a present meaning to convey something with a sense of obligation, just as we use should (past tense of shall) in English.

Sollen
What do the following sentences mean? Du sollst um acht Uhr mit Alex ausgehen. Youre supposed to go out with Alex at 8 oclock. Wir sollten Oma besuchen. We ought to / should visit Grandma.
Wir sollen Oma am Sonntag besuchen. Were supposed to visit Grandma on Sunday.
Er sollte ein Handy kaufen. He ought to / should buy a mobile phone. Soll ich mein Zimmer aufrumen? Shall I tidy my room?

Knnen
Knnen means can or to be able. ich kann Ich kann Deutsch sprechen. du kannst I can speak German. er / sie / es kann Er kann Ski fahren. wir knnen He knows how to ski. ihr knnt sie knnen You cant always translate I can as ich kann. Sie knnen In German there is a distinction between what you are able to do (knnen) and what you are allowed to do (drfen). I can go to the concert. (Mum says Im allowed.) Ich darf ins Konzert gehen. I can go to the concert. (Im able to get there.) Ich kann ins Konzert gehen.

Ich konnte
As with mgen and mchte, youll probably see the imperfect subjunctive form knnte more often than the imperfect form konnte. It is important not to get them confused.
