What is Organizational Behavior?


A field of study that investigates the impact that individuals, groups and structure have on behaviour within organizations

It is important to all management function, roles and skills The behavioral science disciplines of psychology, sociology, social psychology, anthropology and political science all contribute to the means of applying OB concepts

Why study OB?


To learn about yourself and others

To understand how the many organizations you encounter work

To become familiar with team work

Do you think classroom training is as important as on-the-job training/work experience?

Which aspect/s of OB interests you the most?

While dealing with your subordinates have you used any motivational technique/leadership style studied by you in OB?

Few responses to techniques used to handle subordinates, which were gained by studying OB
I always use the Situational leadership style developed by Paul Hersey .....which has helped me a lot in handling difficult scenarios while dealing with subordinates
Have used and implemented various techniques from motivating subordinates to stress management

Understanding of human behavior comes only through experience, only studying a subject doesnt help

As a Manager do you think study of OB has contributed to your success?

Do you think more weightage should be given to OB as a subject irrespective of specialization(chosen) in the management course?

Analysis of the Study


Out of 20 Managers(Who were interviewed) 10 respondents agreed that study of OB has contributed to their success. However 9 said apart from study of OB its the experience that evolved them as successful managers

Conclusion
A manager's job is to manage people, who constitute the "organization". If he can't understand these people (i.e. their behavior), the he cannot manage them effectively Study of OB gives a Manager conceptual clarity about various aspects of Human Behavior in an organizational set up hence he can tactfully handle people around him
