SAP Back Ground- Technology

SAP was founded in June 1972 ("System Analysis and Program Development") The acronym was later changed to stand for ("Systems, Applications and Products in Data Processing").

Three-Tiered Architecture
SAP software uses a three-tiered architecture. In a three-tiered architecture there are three nodes: Presentation Layer or Client Business Logic or Application Server Database Server

Overview of Product Life cycle Management

BASICS
Presentation Layer: Various devices could be used to access SAP business software. For example: desktop, mobile devices, laptops, and so run. This device would be called a presentation layer.

Application Server: The actual SAP software runs on an application server. Client node simply displays the image of the screen that is actually being produced on the application server. It is important to note the application server only runs SAP software. Data is not stored in application server

BASICS
Database Server: Data is stored on a separate machine called database server. Presentation layer communicates with application server to retrieve the screen image to be displayed to the user. Application server in turn communicates with the database server to write data to the database and to retrieve data from the database. The database server would be hosting a database management system like Oracle. Oracle is the most popular choice of database to be used with SAP software. Other databases could be used as well e.g. SQL Server (from Microsoft) and DB2 (form IBM). Network: Network is an important part of a three tiered architecture. The client computer would connect to the application server through internet, or company specific intranet, local area network, dial up line etc. Similar media is used by application server to communicate with database server This way user can run business application virtually from anywhere

Cideon Software
Cideon Software is SAP Certified as an Integration Partner (by SAP, AG)
This is the highest level of partnership between SAP and another business partner Developed the mySAP PLM integrations of Autodesk CAD products such as AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor Further solutions in the SAP environment are output management (plotting) and the generation of PDF version of drawings (conversion)

11

Overview of Conversion Solution

AutoCAD and Inventor geometry files are automatically converted to PDFs by Cideons Conversion Engine software during the appropriate phases of the drawings lifecycle This allows the Engineering Department to limit access to original geometry files while allowing other departments (Purchasing, Service, etc.) to view the drawing in PDF format

DIR (Document Information Record)

DIR stands for Document Info Record It is a storage location for Documents and information to properly describe that document Each AutoCAD/ Inventor file should have its own DIR. (every drawing should have its own DIR) A single DIR can hold more than 1 file. For example, a DIR can contain an AutoCAD file and a PDF file. Stores Metadata in DIR Object Links SAP specific fields (objects)

Material Master Data

Information is stored in the material master record in one of two forms: Data that is descriptive, such as name, size and dimension Data that controls system functions, such as MRP type

Material Master Data

Material master contains all of the information on all of the material a company procures, produces, stores and sells Material master data is used by various business areas, for example:
Purchasing Inventory management Production planning Production order execution and control

During integration, the data is stored without redundancies

Bill of Material Definition

Bills of material (BOMs) contain essential master data for integrated

materials management, production control and product costing
SAP PDM - PLM Overview of Product Life cycle Management 16

Product Definition BOM

Product Definition - BOM
Purpose is to create a Bill of Material in SAP so that the system can plan material The aim is to develop a means necessary to produce a part

Alternative BOM
Provides the ability to create the same finished products using different components/materials

17

Key Points
When extending or copying a BOM from the Material Level to the Plant Level, the material master for the required material must exist The material master has both material views and plant views The material master is the repository for all material information

Material master has to be extended or copied to the Plant Level before BOM can be copied

Overview of Engineering Change Management

Engineering Change Management (ECM) is used to record changes to the various aspects of product data Cideon Integration solution incorporates the use of ECM

Engineering Change Masters

Definition - The change master record is a master record that contains information necessary for the management and control of changes. The change master record contains data of a descriptive character (such as the reason for the change) and control data (such as affectivity data, object type indicators).

Engineering Change request (ECR) Created and requested by data user department (Like Quality , Project, production, other for improvement of product quality ( Process Instruction call down to Up ) Engineering Change Note/Order (ECN) Engineering department created the ECN as per design changes and distribute to the follower department for Implementation of changes CFT team Cross functional team (Representative from each department participate in discussion and submit practically possibilities and propose date of implementation of ECN changes.

Engineering Change Numbers

Engineering Change Management is a central logistics function that can be used to change various aspects of production basic data (for example, BOMs, materials, and documents ) with history (with date affectivity). A change with history has the following distinctive characteristics: As far as documents are concerned, The change number is maintained in the basic data in the document info record. You can only process a document with reference to one change number. When the change number is saved in the document info record, it cannot be changed. However, you can reserve a document for one or more change numbers. To do this, you must enter an object management record for the document in the change master. When you change the document later, you will see a list of all change numbers for which the document has been reserved by means of an object management record.
