Internet as a Medium of Communication

Improved access to data Due to the widespread nature of the Internet any equipped user can access the information on the web from any location at any instant When hyper terminal is used there is a speed constraint due to

thetelephone lines, but in case of the Internet, high-speed data

transfer can be achieved using DSL (Digital Subscriber Line)

SERVER SIDE INTERFACE

Our project implements Remote Home control via the Internet, which establishes a network connection and develops a client-server environment to control appliances remotely. This is characterized by several PCs (called clients) that access another centralized

computer (called a server) via a network connection. It facilitates the sharing of resources worldwide with minimal configuration on the client PC. The communication of the client with the server is defined by the protocols and a common application program (a browser) .The server is a delivery vehicle for all the information on the Internet, which can be accessible to all the clients. The Internet server provides an easier way to supply a widevariety of on-demand information services to Internet users.

REMOTE LOGIN PROCESS

Home Automation Server Software

HOME AUTOMATION SERVER this software helps you to emulate

your serial
communication over a very famous remote access utility called TELNET so

telnet is created at your host PC.

Telnet (Terminal Network)

It is a client/server application program. In TELNET a user can run different application programs at a remote site and create result that can transfer to his local computer

When a user want to access an application program utility located on a remote machine he performs remote login operations.

The terminal passes the character to the operating System. The local operating system accepts the characters but does not interpret them.

From the TCP/IP stack the characters are delivered to the operating system and passed to TELNET

The operating system then passes the characters to the appropriate program.

Home Automation Server Software

AT THE SERVER SIDE

Capture data acquired through the Internet. Configure the COM port of the PC for specific baud rate (9600 Hz for this project) and mode of transmission (9-bit word). Transmit the data over the serial link.

AT THE DEVICE SIDE

Receive the data sent by the PC over the serial link. Operate the microcontroller accordingly.

THE COM PORT-HARDWARE ASPECTS

The COM port i.e. serial port of the PC is an asynchronous serial port controlled

by a UART or Universal Asynchronous ReceiverTransmitter and is compatible

with the RS-232C standard.

THE COM PORT-SOFTWARE ASPECTS

In our project, the COM port is programmed for a baud rate of 9600 Hz.. The program for the port is written in the C language. Whenever the user sends commands TELNET, the program at the server stores the values in a structure. Also, the program then executes the

APPLICATION
The concept of Home Automation via Internet can be expanded and used practically in the following industrial applications:

Security systems
Cameras can be installed at various locations in the shopping center with each camera covering a specific range of area and with the help of the Internet remote control the entire shopping center can be monitored from one location. The range of vision can be changed by controlling the angle of camera by the remote control. Such type of security system can also be used to provide security in homes, banks, research labs etc.

Temperature Monitoring
In hospitals, it is very important to maintain an optimum temperature in the Operation Theater, the I.C.U and the morgue. In such cases, Internet remote control can be used to adjust the air conditioner settings and thus continuously monitor the temperature from any location. Such remote temperatProcess Control In large Aquaculture centers, the Internet controlled system has been used to monitor and control important parameters such as temperature of water, pH and oxygen content, using different types of sensors. This can be expanded to processes which require careful monitoring like those for extracting medicines, fluids using microorganismsure monito

FUTURE SCOPE
Home automation through the Internet has enabled us to bring the same kind of PC connectivity enjoyed at the office to the confines of the residence. This home networking concept, once limited in scope to certain home control-appliances has evolved to encompass a wide variety of solutions & consumer needs. This idea can be developed in the future in the given areas as follows:

1. Entertainment
Beginning with advanced set-top boxes and new music players (that derive their content from the Internet via radio stations or MP3 files), music and video will be distributed to a

2. Home Control
More homes will integrate such systems as lighting, security and HVAC using enhanced computing power. With true two-way networking capabilities, home control interfaces move outside of the home, providing users the ability to monitor and interact with systems remotely.

3. Communications
More advanced communications systems will work their way into the residential setting. These systems will deliver multiple options for voice and data services (either through the physical or virtual provisioning of multiple lines) to not only traditional telephone handsets, but also PCs, PDAs and information appliances

CONCLUSION
The main aim of our project was to develop a home automation system which could be controlled through the internet. This was because there were existing systems which implemented control through the power line or hyper terminal, but very few which used the internet.

DISADVANTAGES
FEWER CONNECTION DEVICE AVAILABILITY SLOWER DATA TRANSMISSION POSSIBLE DATA SECURITY ISSUES INSTALLATION IN EXISTING HOME MORE DIFFICULT
