Definition:
The Midwifery Management Process is a systematic approach of problem-solving which is based on scientific principles and uses critical thinking to enable a professional midwife to assist clients and their families to cope with health problems.
Consists systematic and orderly collection and analysis of data pertaining to the health status of the client for the purpose of identifying needs, problems or making a midwifery diagnosis
Is an important part of the process because if an incorrect assessment is made a wrong diagnosis will follow which could mean inappropriate planning and implementation of improper care.
Objective data: Includes; findings from the physical examination, laboratory findings, and other investigations.
It expresses the midwife's professional and clinical judgment about individual family and community responses to act
It forms the basis of selection of midwifery interventions to achieve outcomes for which the midwife is accountable.
Midwifery diagnoses Listed according to priority. High priority involves the clients urgent needs
Goals of care The desired change in the health status of the client.

Midwifery Intervention Provides exact interventions required to achieve both short and long term goals. Rationale The midwife should have a justification for each intervention carried out.

The planned activities can be done by the midwife directly, by the client and her family or the physician.
CASE STUDY
Mrs Thabwa is a 20 years old primgravida. She reports to the labour ward at term gestation with complaints of lower abdominal pains and backache since yesterday. On examn, she looks anxious, and exhausted. T. 37c, p. 88, R.28. BP 120/80. contractions are 2 moderate in 10 minutes and cervix is 4 cm dilated. Using the midwifery management process, give the management of Mrs Thabwa up to the time of delivery.
