Introduction
• Also spelled Shi-ba-shi - the 18 style Taiji
Qigong has a host of names including the
18 postures, the 18 movements and the 18
exercises - was created in 1982 in Shanghai,
China.
• Tai Chi Master He Weiqi (He Wei Chi)
• Qigong Master and healer Lin Hou Sheng.
• The word qi (chee) is often translated
“vital energy” and gong means “work.”
• So qigong may be interpreted as
“working with vital energy.” Qigong as
a healing art is a precursor to all the
martial arts;
• before the Shaolin monks developed
the gongfu (kung fu) for which they
are famous, they trained in qigong to
maximize their health.
Origin
• In the l3th Century a
Taoist hermit, Chang
San Feng from Wu
Tang Mountain was
disturbed during his

crane.

• raise arms to
shoulders

II Posture: Opening the
Chest
• It looks like you are
hugging a big balloon
and then letting it go.
III Posture: Painting a
Rainbow
• Imagine turning your
head from side to side
as you look at
something on your out
stretched palm - while
trying to cover the
crown of your head
with your other hand.
IV-Separating the
Clouds
• Imagine you are
picking up a big
fluffy cloud then
turning your palms
to push it away in
two directions
V Posture: Rolling the
Arms in a Horse-
riding Stance
• imagine that you have
a balloon on the palm
of your hand and you
bring the other hand
round in a big curve to
push the balloon
gently off your palm
VI posture: Rowing a
Boat in the Middle of
a Lake
• imagine that you are
drawing circles with
your fingertips. Your
right hand is drawing
an anticlockwise circle
(when you look at
your fingers) and your
left hand is drawing a
clockwise circle.
VII Posture: Carry Ball
in Front of the
Shoulders
• imagine that you are
standing in clouds and
just by lifting your
hand from your side
you can scoop up a
ball of cloud. Carry
the ball of cloud up to
your opposite shoulder
then turn your hand
over to let it drift away
and bring your hand
back to your side to
get another ball of
cloud.
VIII Posture: Gazing at
the Moon
• imagine that you have
a big balloon between
your hands and you
turn to look at the
moon over you
shoulder and then you
lower your arms and
turn to look over the
other shoulder.
1XPosture: Turning
the Waist and
Pushing with the
Palm
• imagine that you are
pushing your hand
across your body to
the opposite corner
and then pulling back
X Posture: cloud hands in a
horse-riding stance
\
• It looks like you are
drawing rounded
rectangles with your arms.
BUT it only looks as
though arms are waving
from side to side. You get
the effect from turning the
waist and letting your
arms just follow!
X1 Posture: Scooping
the Sea and Looking
at the Horizon
• its like bending down
to scoop up a handful
of water and raising it
to your head before
fanning your arms out
and down again for the
next scoop
X11 Posture: Pushing
the Waves
• imagine that you are
pushing forward and
pulling backwards so
that you can draw
circles with the heel of
your palm
X111Posture: Flying
Dove spreads its
Wings
• imagine that you have
huge wings and
closing them to form a
circle in front of you
and then opening them
out really wide to get
lots of fresh air into
your lungs
X1111 Posture:
Punching in a Horse-
riding Stance
• slow motion punching
with soft fists
XV Posture: Flying
Wild Goose
• like a large bird
flapping it’s wings
up and down
XV1 Posture: Turn like
a flying wheel
• imagine that you are
a old fashioned
windmill with big
wooden sails turning
first in a clockwise
direction and then in
an anti clockwise
direction
XV1 Posture: Stepping
and Bouncing a Ball
• it's like watching a
puppet on strings with
the arm connected to
the opposite knee. So
when your left arm
goes up your right
knee comes up and
your right arm is
connected to your left
knee.
Xviii Posture:
Balancing the Chi to
Close
• imagine that you are
scooping water in your
hands to cool your
forehead and then
using the sides of your
palms to brush away
any spills down the
front of your body...
No man ever steps in the same river
twice,
for it's not the same river and he's not
the same man. **
