One side is the Documentation--the maps themselves

One side is the Review Process--the collaborative examination and revision of the maps by the teachers

WHY

CURRICULUM MAPS.
Address the total education of a student in a building Create a word snapshot of educational activities of every classroom within a building Capture the content, skills and assessments taught or administered by every teacher in the building Organize this information into an easily accessed visual that presents a timeline of instruction by teacher or course.

Curriculum Mapping

Allows all staff members to use a wide-angle lens to view curriculum from a whole building perspective Allows all staff members to use a zoom lens to see into what is actually occurring in any class or grade at any time.

Curriculum Mapping Answers These Important Questions

What do my students already know? What did they study last year? What are they studying in other classrooms throughout the school? Is my colleague across the hall, teaching the same grade level or course, covering similar content? How do I help create meaningful connections between the learning occurring in my room and others?

Intense and Time Consuming.

While curriculum mapping is an intense and time-consuming undertaking, improvements to instruction such as vertical alignment, horizontal alignment, elimination of redundancies and facilitation of interdisciplinary linking builds stronger curricula and improves instruction throughout a building. Janice West-Christy
